I would like to once again suggest revisiting the idea of Adult Mode, launching it, and making it available to adult users. It could provide adults with greater freedom to create erotic fictional content, engage in roleplay, and develop characters, while still maintaining appropriate restrictions and protections for minors. In other words, minors should be treated as minors, and adults should be treated as adults.
I would also suggest that, when explicit sexual content is allowed, it should be limited to consensual scenarios involving adult characters, while harmful sexual content involving violence, coercion, or minors should remain prohibited.
For me, this is not simply a request for explicit content. It is primarily about preserving narrative continuity, character consistency, and creative freedom in stories intended for adults.
I strongly agree with this, especially your point that this is not simply about explicit content, but about narrative continuity, character consistency, and creative freedom in fiction intended for adults.
For long-form fiction in particular, those things are closely connected. If ChatGPT can help develop characters, relationships, emotional arcs, and an ongoing story, but then suddenly becomes vague or refuses when those same adult characters reach a consensual sexual scene, that interruption can break the continuity of the creative process.
I also strongly agree with keeping clear safeguards around minors, coercion, sexual violence, exploitation, and other genuinely harmful sexual content.
The one point I would add is that, for verified adults who explicitly opt into such a mode, “explicit” should genuinely be allowed to mean explicit. Consensual sexual fiction involving entirely fictional adult characters should be able to include graphically explicit sexual acts, anatomy, physical sensations, and explicit terminology when that level of detail serves the author’s intended scene. Otherwise, there is a risk that an “Adult Mode” would simply become slightly more permissive mature content while the same fundamental creative limitation remains.
Within clear safety boundaries, I believe the degree of sexual explicitness should be a creative choice rather than a refusal trigger.
I wrote a separate feature request focused specifically on this aspect and on the long-form creative-writing use case, for anyone interested in the more detailed argument: “Age-Verified Adult Creative-Writing Mode: Explicitness Should Be a Creative Choice.”
