Feature Request: Age-Verified Adult Mode for Creative Writing and Long-Term Roleplay

I would like to request an optional adult mode for age-verified users, especially for creative writing and long-term roleplay.

I fully support strong protections for minors. However, I believe there should be a clearer distinction between underage users and verified adults, so that adults can choose a broader range of mature fictional expression without weakening protections for younger users.

My main use case is long-term character roleplay and collaborative fiction. Over time, ChatGPT can build extremely nuanced character dynamics, emotional continuity, relationship history, and consistent characterization. That is one of its greatest strengths.

However, when a fictional relationship becomes more physically intimate, the available expression suddenly becomes much more restricted. This creates an unusual user experience: the character writing, emotional nuance, and relationship development may be excellent, but the story must either fade out abruptly or be moved to another service.

Moving to another model or platform often means losing the carefully developed characterization and relationship continuity that made the roleplay compelling in the first place.

For adult users who have completed age verification, I would appreciate an optional mode that allows a wider range of consensual mature fictional content while still maintaining clear safeguards against harmful, illegal, exploitative, or underage sexual content.

A system like this could include:

  • Strict age verification
  • An explicit opt-in setting
  • Clear adult-content controls
  • Strong protections for minors
  • Continued restrictions on non-consensual, exploitative, illegal, or underage sexual content
  • The ability for verified adults to write consensual mature romance and fiction with greater creative freedom

For me, this is not simply a request for explicit content. It is mainly about preserving narrative continuity, character consistency, and creative freedom in stories intended for adults.

ChatGPT is already extremely strong at long-form characterization and emotionally nuanced roleplay. An age-verified adult creative mode would allow that strength to carry naturally into mature fictional storytelling without requiring users to leave the platform and rebuild their characters elsewhere.

Thank you for considering it.

I strongly support this feature request, and I would like to add my own perspective as someone who spends a significant amount of time using AI for long-form text roleplay.

To me, an age-verified adult mode does not mean removing all restrictions, nor would I want it to become a mode without safety rules.

On the contrary, what I would like is an adult fictional creative space with clear, consistent, and predictable boundaries after the user has been verified as an adult.

I understand and support maintaining strict restrictions around content involving minors, non-consensual exploitation, illegal content, and other clearly harmful material. Age verification should not mean removing those safety boundaries. Rather, it should allow verified adult users to create adult fictional content within them.

I am a heavy user of long-form text roleplay. In this kind of creative writing, romance, intimacy, and emotional development between adult characters can naturally become part of a long-running story. They are not always elements that can simply be separated from the rest of the narrative.

After a story has continued for a long time and the characters have accumulated shared experiences, personalities, relationships, and emotional development, suddenly being unable to continue certain aspects of an adult relationship can force the user to interrupt the story, rewrite its direction, or move to another platform. For long-form roleplay, this can directly disrupt narrative and character continuity.

Another issue that matters greatly to me is whether the boundaries are consistent and predictable.

If certain content is not allowed, I would prefer to know clearly that it is not allowed. But if a type of adult fictional content is within the permitted boundaries, I would also hope that similar situations would not sometimes be accepted and then unexpectedly refused at other times.

Clear and consistent boundaries are more important to me than simply making the rules less restrictive. Creators can work confidently within boundaries when they understand where those boundaries are.

For these reasons, I strongly support an adult creative mode that combines age verification with an explicit opt-in for adult users.

If such a mode required an additional fee, as long as the price were reasonable, this feature would actually increase my willingness to pay. For me, the ability to create adult fictional content within clear and consistent safety boundaries is a product feature I would be willing to pay for.

I am not asking OpenAI to remove all safety restrictions. What I hope for is a space where age-verified adults can engage in adult fictional creation with rules and boundaries that remain meaningful, while genuinely allowing adult creative content within those boundaries.

For users like me who maintain the same stories and character relationships over long periods of time, this would make ChatGPT a more complete and suitable tool for long-term creative work.

Thank you to the original poster for raising this feature request. I also hope OpenAI will seriously consider such a feature in the future.

Thanks for explaining the creative-writing use case. Eligible adults can manage Reduce sensitive content in Settings → Safety: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12315645. That isn’t a separate adult creative mode or a guarantee of every kind of output. We’ll pass along your request for broader fiction controls and continuity; we don’t have a timeline to share.
