Replace Google Assistant (or now Gemini) with Chat GPT

Peplacing Google Assistant or Gemini with ChatGPT on your phone. When you long-press the home button or say “Hey ChatGPT,” it activates, ready to assist you with tasks or answer questions. This seamless integration allows you to use ChatGPT as your personal AI assistant, making interactions intuitive and efficient.
And also add additional feature like “Ask about what on screen”, or “Ask about this PDF”, or “Ask about this video”…

I wonder if there are any ways now to do this? The LLMs continue to improve. So why are we in our apartments and houses saying Hey Google or Hey Alexa? These interfaces are from the Stone Age. The OpenAI voice assist via the iPhone is good but I’d pay a lot for a home device that does this. No issues making one from Arduino or Pi if available.

Currently, I believe the only way to interact with ChatGPT like this would be to setup Home Assistant and connect that to the OpenAI API and then interact with it through a connected microphone and speaker. If you YouTube “Network Chuck I Replaced Alexa”, you’ll find a comprehensive guide on how Chuck did this, except rather than use OpenAI API he connected it to his own local LLM instead.

However, this is still limited to being a home made smart speaker rather than a mobile device assistant.

With the rumours of Alexa getting a serious AI upgrade (Alexa+), and Gemini already engrained into most Android devices, I think it’s a no brainer that OpenAI explore the idea of entering this market, as it helps expand the user base even more.

I watched a few of these videos, and now wonder if something simpler can be used. For example consider a cheap no-cell Android Phone running an LLM via an app. Attach a bluetooth speaker and microphone. It could be configured to be “always on”, this might do it.
