What if You Could Build Your Own AI-Powered Smart Speaker — No Big Tech Required?

Imagine this: an AI-powered speaker that doesn’t lock you into a corporate ecosystem.

No Alexa. No Google Assistant. Just pure AI — like ChatGPT — running directly on your custom setup.

:sparkles: What’s the idea?

  • Integrate AI into any hardware you choose — whether it’s an Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or a custom WiFi-connected speaker.
  • No restrictions — you control how the AI works, what apps it can access, and how it responds.
  • Use it for anything — smart home setups, portable AI assistants, or even business tools — all without a tech giant pulling the strings.

:wrench: How would it work?
The AI doesn’t control the hardware — you do. It’s like having ChatGPT in a speaker, but it’s fully customizable. You choose how it connects to your devices, what it says, and how smart it becomes.

:light_bulb: Why is this exciting?

  • Privacy — keep the AI local or connected only to the services you trust.
  • Flexibility — build AI tools tailored to your needs, not a company’s agenda.
  • Endless potential — smart assistants for your business, real-time voice interfaces, or next-gen home automation.

Possible with the Realtime API! Have seen some fun personal projects around this already.

Isn’t that what hugging face is full of? I’ve been exploring several alternatives over there. Not the speakers but that llms to build them. I’ve been working on one integrated with MyCroft that does all kinds that I am not ready to share here yet.
