Read Aloud button gone, supposed to be between rating and canvas button windows 10

%Title: Read Aloud Feature No Longer Available on Desktop App (Post-Update Bug?)

Summary:
The “Read Aloud” feature has disappeared from the ChatGPT desktop app following a recent update. This appears to be a regression or an unintentional removal, as the feature is still available and functioning on other platforms (mobile app, for example).

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open the ChatGPT desktop app (Windows 11, in my case).
  2. Open a chat with a response.
  3. Attempt to access the “Read Aloud” feature using the expected UI element (speaker icon or right-click options).
  4. Observe: No read aloud options are present.

Workaround:
Using the mobile app as a remote voice output source—while creative—is not ideal or sustainable. The feature was useful for accessibility, multitasking, and general UX on desktop and its absence impacts workflow.

Notes:
Some community members have reported similar issues. A few have suggested disabling Canvas as a possible fix, but this did not resolve the issue on my end. There has been no indication in official update logs that this feature was sunset or deprecated, so I am reporting it as a bug under the assumption that it is not intentional.

Expected Behavior:
The Read Aloud feature should still be accessible in the desktop app interface as it was prior to the update.

Please investigate.

I’m holding onto 88% of my sanity, but the remaining 12% is starting to flicker.%

Here are my findings. Clean install on a pc not installed before. Issue duplicates for all chats. Canvas option is available as a check box in advanced settings pc only. Not an option on other platforms. Please help. This is mission critical feature for our work.

Hi, Wanted to say it just reappeared here in Germany , JUNE 3rd 12:30 AM . It should be available worldwide then

The issue is fixed as of recent hours. I was using pc earlier this morning and it was still missing. On refreshing it is restored. I am grateful.

  1. Click your name or profile icon
  2. Choose Settings
  3. Go to Customizations → Voice
  4. Select any voice from the list (even if one was selected before)
  5. Close settings — the Read Aloud button should now reappear when highlighting text

That’s it!
This worked for me when Read Aloud went missing. Hope it helps someone else too.

Hey, so it worked for one day and today when I refresh there is a codex sidebar icon with a nonstop repeating pop-up box - a blue tool tip telling you the codex is there - and I can’t get to settings or actually even get the responses when I type in the prompt and also the read aloud button is not there so It worked for one day and the problem is currently still there

After restarting computer just to checkCodex pop-up box isn’t visible anymore, but the consequence that had is still there I can’t open settings. I can’t launch voice mode. I can’t see any new prompts replies generated after this happened even though they work on the phone they cannot be seen on the PC. the PC is in some kind of halt. That is rooted in that codex sidebar pop-up notifying you that it exists.
