Hi everyone,
I received an email from OpenAI saying that my API organization must switch from monthly billing to prepaid credits by July 24, 2026. The email also says that API requests may stop working if there is no prepaid balance.
The problem is that I have no way to buy credits.
In the Platform Billing Overview, I still only see:
Pay as you go
You’ll be billed at the end of each calendar month for usage during that month.
There is no Add to balance, no Add credits, no Auto recharge, and no initial prepaid setup flow.
I have already checked the following:
- I am logged into the correct API organization.
- I am the only member of the organization.
- My role is Owner.
- I am using the Platform billing page, not the ChatGPT subscription page.
- The organization already has a valid payment method.
- I checked the direct billing URL, different browsers and incognito mode.
- I recorded the full page and sent the video to OpenAI Support.
I contacted Support and explained all of this. First, they asked me to confirm the exact organization name and whether I was an Owner. I confirmed both.
Their next reply simply explained how Auto recharge works and told me to use the “Add to balance” button after my credits run out.
That is exactly the problem: those controls do not exist in my account.
I replied again asking them to check whether prepaid billing has actually been enabled for my organization and to escalate the case to someone who can inspect the billing configuration. So far, I have not received an actual explanation or solution.
Several production mobile apps depend on this API organization, so I cannot afford to have the chat functionality go offline because OpenAI requires a billing change that I am currently unable to make.
Has anyone else received the prepaid migration email while still seeing only the old monthly Pay as you go plan?
Did the prepaid options eventually appear automatically, or did Support have to enable them manually?
I would also like to know whether OpenAI plans to enforce the cutoff for organizations that were never given access to the prepaid controls.
