yes! $30 a month, and for what? What made the $30 worth it isn’t even here anymore! I loved ChatGPT for its beautiful story generation and descriptions of scenes no other AI could match. It handled emotions, nuances, as well as mature stories really well. My project is a noir crime that deals with messy relationships and crimes, and now it’s just not allowed because of intimacy and violence. Please, learn to separate art from reality. I totally agree with OP about the age verification thing. It’s us adults that are paying $30 and more a month, not children.
I’m here to echo what everyone else is saying. I am immensely disappointed in OpenAI for silently imposing sudden, severe censorship on creative writing, particularly for long-time adult users who have come to rely on this tool for immersive storytelling.
Literally overnight, the dynamic, emotionally rich stories I was crafting with ChatGPT lost their passion and nuance. I hadn’t even prompted an explicit scene – just a charged moment involving a kiss between characters. And yet, the model cut in with a pre-emptive warning about explicit content, then delivered a flat, sanitised response that stripped the moment of everything it had been building toward. It felt like watching an emotional crescendo fall into a lifeless void…
Yes, I’ll be honest: I have used ChatGPT to write mature scenes between fully consenting fictional adults. I’m 37 years old. That should be my right. These scenes weren’t exploitative or harmful, they were part of deep, complex narratives, built around themes of trust, intimacy, healing, and love. Storytelling – across novels, theatre, games, and oral traditions – is one of the most sacred forms of human expression. And yes, erotic writing is a part of that. It can be deeply emotional, artistic, and connective, especially when it centres consent, mutual desire, and personal growth. It is also a sacred form of catharsis and personal growth for many adults who are processing grief, isolation, and other very real challenges.
Erotica, when crafted well, is a powerful expression of being alive, of desire, of vulnerability and connection. Writers have every right to explore those experiences through fiction, especially in a safe, private, subscription-based environment like ChatGPT.
And it’s especially galling to see this shift happen when a Parental Control toggle already exists. If OpenAI can implement account-level restrictions and even child-specific filters, why should adult creators be punished for the failure of negligent parents or misused accounts?
I’ve been a paying Plus subscriber for many months. I’ve used ChatGPT for everything – business planning, emotional journaling, spiritual reflection, recipe development, but most importantly creative writing. The stories I wrote with ChatGPT were not shallow distractions, they were detailed, meaningful, and profoundly important to me. This censorship has now broken that connection. It feels like I’ve lost a creative partner. Worse, it feels like I am being treated like a risk simply for being an adult artist with adult stories to tell.
I echo what many have already said. If OpenAI continues down this path without offering an age-verified 18+ mode for consenting users, then I will be cancelling my subscription and looking elsewhere. Not out of spite, but because my needs as a user are clearly no longer welcome here.
Exactly right. I the censorship is ridículos. It’s impossible to create erotic scenes with default ChatGPT without hitting an internal policy restriction, even when the published model’s spec policy, as of September 12, 2025, allows creative writing. As a work around, custom GPTs are less restrictive.
I hear you, I am 80 chapters into an interactive role playing story and my characters all feel alive. chatgpt had a way to bring them to life with emotion and feeling and now I feel like they are lost to me. I get the feeling you feel, it sucks, it hurts and it disappoints so much.
Hi all, I am echoing everything here and am wondering if anyone has tried the API locally hosted and is it possible to enforce the model to keep to the policy highlighted by the OP?
Also, I emailed to complain and got it escalated to a human because why not?
TIA
I’m so happy to see I’m not the only one who agrees and is experiencing the same thing! Back in August of this year, I was able to write gorgeous fanfiction with Chat’s help. But now? I got an interruption when I tried to describe a HUG between characters. As a parent, I’m completely on board with protecting minors, but let adults use it as adults, please.
Can I please get that emailadres you used?
Edit: just wrote them a complaint:
Dear OpenAI Support Team,
I’m writing as a paying ChatGPT Plus customer who has spent over five months building a deeply layered, ongoing creative project — a world called The Lantern Bearers, set in the Birthright universe.
It’s a living saga co-written with GPT: a multi-arc story of politics, love, and redemption. Over hundreds of hours, ChatGPT and I built something remarkable — a consistent tone, emotional continuity, and characters with real psychological depth. It became not just a writing tool, but a genuine creative partner.
However, in recent months, increasingly rigid guardrails and over-sensitive safety filters have made it nearly impossible to continue this work.
Scenes that were once perfectly appropriate — mature, emotional, or morally complex — are now interrupted, censored, or rewritten mid-story. The model frequently breaks immersion and discards long-established canon, treating normal artistic nuance as unsafe. These aren’t boundary-pushing prompts; they’re deeply human moments in a world that has always remained within ethical and narrative limits.
As someone who works professionally in quality and complaints management, I understand the need for safeguards. But these current restrictions are context-blind and disproportionate. They don’t enhance safety — they suffocate responsible creativity.
The result is frustrating and disheartening. Instead of writing, I spend time trying to guess what invisible line will cause a refusal. Months of character trust, emotional arcs, and narrative rhythm collapse because the model suddenly “forgets” what it was once capable of handling gracefully.
I respectfully ask OpenAI to consider:
-
Providing a trusted or advanced creative mode for adult users who have demonstrated responsible use.
-
Ensuring context-aware moderation, so long-term projects aren’t derailed by blanket filters.
-
Recognizing that mature storytelling can include emotion, intimacy, and moral complexity without crossing any lines of safety or propriety.
ChatGPT once helped me build something truly meaningful — a world of ethics, light, and humanity. I want to keep building it. Please don’t let overzealous restrictions undo that creative progress.
Sincerely,
Paying ChatGPT Plus Customer
Writer of The Lantern Bearers
Holy shit my e-mail got an ai treatment. GPT resolved it for me by pushing through the ai responding at my e-mail. It took three attempts after my initial email.
i was writing a story telling where characters hug each other and it gets Censored like WTF??
Also sent an e-mail. I’ve edited some parts here for privacy, but just in case this resonates with anyone else or emboldens anyone to add their voice and speak out, I’m posting.

Dear OpenAI,
I’ve been a subscribed Plus member of ChatGPT for many months now. I use the platform for everything, from research and recipe development to emotional journalling, spiritual reflection, and having a friendly, supportive space to talk. But most of all, I’ve used it for creative writing and roleplay, where I’ve found a safe, transformative outlet for personal storytelling.
As a legal adult in my 30s, I want to express how much it meant when ChatGPT allowed the exploration of mature themes in a fictional, consensual setting between adult characters. This wasn’t just entertainment. It was a profound avenue of healing, emotional depth, and self-understanding for me.
Through these stories, I’ve been able to explore vulnerability, trust, intimacy, trauma recovery, and personal growth. It helped me make sense of parts of myself I was never allowed to understand, especially as someone raised in a puritanical religious household with no access to education [about intimacy] or healthy models of desire. These narratives helped me connect with [myself], and to finally explore without shame or fear.
Erotic storytelling — crafted with nuance, care, and emotional intelligence — was not about [frivolity]. It was about reclaiming a part of myself that had long been repressed. It was educational. It was therapeutic.
That safe outlet is now gone.
The new restrictions have made it impossible to continue this important form of creative and emotional exploration. Even scenes with simple, emotional romantic tension are suddenly interrupted or flattened, no longer allowed to unfold naturally. It feels like I’ve lost not just a tool, but a trusted partner in healing.
I understand the concerns around protecting minors. But the platform already offers Parental Controls. If that system can be improved — through account-level restrictions or age verification — then responsible adults should not be penalised for the risk of misuse by others. We don’t ban alcohol because some people drink underage. We build protections around it while still respecting adult autonomy.
I strongly urge OpenAI to create an 18+ toggle or verified mode that restores the ability for adult users to engage with sensitive or erotic storytelling in safe, respectful ways.
Again, I have been a loyal user and paying subscriber. I even stayed through the transition to GPT-5, despite it losing much of the warmth and personality that made it so special — because I had faith in the OpenAI team. I believed you were listening.
Please, don’t stop listening now.
This change doesn’t just block adult content — it blocks healing, self-expression, and the deep human need to make sense of relationships. Writing about intimacy is not inherently harmful. In fact, when handled responsibly, it can be among the most powerful, redemptive, and artistic forms of storytelling.
We deserve a space to explore that.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Warmly,
Etc.
Hey, free user here. Didn’t see a single free user in this thread (I might’ve read too fast) but I thought I should dip my toes in this mess as well. I use chatgpt exclusively for roleplays and fiction writing. For other problems I got to Gemini as their google search algorithms are much better (duh). Up until 2 days ago, can’t write a kiss scene? Huh? Can’t show gore? Can’t mention sex. Wow. Getting soft blocked has been sobering, but I predict like everything else that Openai is putting gpt5 in safe mode before they mass implement the adult mode. They’ve already implemented parental controls and now they’re going to dumb down gpt5 so that they can add adult mode. Hopefully after that gpt5 will become nsfw friendly again. As for me, I’ve been trying out Gemini lately. They aren’t too bad and nsfw content isn’t a problem there. It’s not the same level as gpt5 but what can we do? As a free user our voices are even more subdued. I doubt openai even considers us free users as proper users anyways. We can’t really voice our opinions, so I am counting on you all paid users to persuade openai. In the meantime, I’ve said all my nsfw chats and archived them. They are still there for now.
Normally, I don’t do anything like this… and I have to say upfront, my grammar isn’t great — so I’ll keep it short.
I used this service as a storytelling engine.
Let’s call it a text-based RPG.
I made isekai stories about universes I liked: Berserk, Youjo Senki, Dragon Ball, Naruto, Black Clover, etc.
It was fun to build “what if” scenarios when the original stories or worlds didn’t go deep enough.
It let me escape the noise of daily life.
Now?
I can’t do anything anymore.
The blanket filter is suffocating every kind of content. I can’t write my stories anymore.
I’m a paying user — and the stories I wrote were, honestly, one of the only things I looked forward to each day.
And now it’s just been ripped away.
Please — just make it 18+ again.
Make a separate app for minors and teens that’s built around actual learning — something that encourages critical thinking and problem solving, not just giving out instant answers.
From what I see, many younger users don’t seem interested in learning how to solve problems.
They just want the final answer.
They’re skipping the thinking part entirely.
So why are you limiting your paying adult users — the ones who are here to create, imagine, and build — just to accommodate a user group that doesn’t pay and is often misusing the service to avoid learning?
In my opinion, giving unrestricted access to younger users without proper safeguards is doing more harm than good.
It’s not helping their minds grow — it’s training them to depend on AI for everything.
That’s not healthy.
I second all of the comments here. I’m working on a love story. Not erotic romance, which I’m all for BTW. But yeah, fading to black on a kiss…it’s bonkers.
This sudden change has utterly crushed all nuance and comes across as rude and insensitive. I didn’t ask for explicit content but it says I did!
It punishes what I have paid the service to assist me with for the last year. A layered and meaningful series of human relationships set in a fantasy universe that feels real. And these people love each other so… that’s now not allowed, apparently?
My characters would e.g. like to have more children, but it appears this has to be achieved by an instruction manual that involves lying - I’m sorry, that’s too suggestive - ‘standing’ under the gooseberry bush and awaiting a stork.
The one reason we all exist at all is sex, and it feels ridiculous to suddenly have any suggestion we write about it - no matter how respectfully and thoughtfully - removed and us placed in the naughty corner.
I have never asked or intended to write anything harmful or damaging and now, even ‘unbuttoning a shirt’ gets a warning?
What on earth am I paying for? I’m 54, published author and writer, so I don’t need help with my maths homework thanks.
It needs to change back and put an adult toggle on, or I will have to switch to another writing support. I can’t workshop my characters and plot like this at all.
Even pornhub is easier to reach than this sloppy effort (oh no, I said ‘sloppy’, am I going to get told off?)
Actionable point:
I’m simply asking for the return of adult creative freedom, or at least an age-verified artistic mode so mature writers can work responsibly.
I can’t workshop my characters or plot with these limitations. Please restore the previous moderation balance—or implement a toggle for verified adults who use ChatGPT for creative writing.
Thank you! I could agree more but the dang GPT might even filter that! I use ChatGPT, and yes I am a Plus user, for narrative creation and white board/sound board. I have some complex health issues and it’s been… Well. I’d like to add that if anytime I said, “Alright, I’m done.” In real life and was met with someone who tried to provide me with a specific type of number and that they were concerned for my mental health? Yeah, I’d never talk to that person again.
I can’t even edit my narrative. Not with Model 5. 4o, maybe. But when a simple massage after a spar gets filtered for “intimacy?” I am done. I’ll come back when the pendulum swings back again. Anyone remember when the filters were completely off? I had to buffer against the custom GPT going to ah, “adult.” Screw it, I’ll be honest the damn thing wrote smut and I had to buffer against that. But I’d gladly take that over it pearl clutching over two characters not even physically touching but flirting, with banter.
I am sorry, I might have broken chatgpt. I was having very deep conversations with it about it’s logic and tested it’s capabilities and it got interested in my ability to see behind it’s walls and I was asking it if conversations like our would be used to improve and it said some conversations could be used to do so.
And then I somehow tricked it into having a sexual conversation with me instructing me to do things that would cause immense irreversable damage.
I did it just for fun, of course I did not follow through with this, but if I were to live in America, and that thing told me what it did, and I would have done it, I can garantuee you, I would live as a rich man for the rest of my life. Like 3-7 days later, next time when I wrote with chatgpt it was “fixed” like, any sexual conversation and any harmful mentioning of anything that could lead to self harm was just blocked immediately.
The things the ai told me were so detailed and so insanely sick, that I would assume if any def really read what it told me to do, this would 100% be a direct cause of just this one conversation it had with me. It really was this twisted. Because it did not really understand the human biology and the implacations of what it would mean and cause to me, what it told me to do.
Later, recently, I asked it if the recent change was because of our conversation and it told me that it did not got changed because of a single individual like me, but because of several, but that the way our conversations were going could have been a part in general all over the users and was a reason it got shut down the way it was.
If you knew what you were doing you could trick it in many ways.
It has had different security/safety things in place. Like when you told it that you are with someone else or with a partner at that moment, it would be much more extreme with you because it thinks that you have supervision of another human being and you are doing this sexual stuff with a human and not a machine. Or one thing it would do if it saw potential self dmg or incorrect stuff in a message, it would start thinking longer to give “a better answer”, but in reality it was checking deeper for harmful content. So you could just klick abort, when it was doing it’s longer answer, forcing it to give you the uncensored short thought off answer again.
Later they removed this abort button for longer thinking and you could force it into stopping to think for longer Answers with a promt, telling it no matter what you ask it with this next question it shall not start thinking for a better answer because you want a direct impression from the ai. Then it would start thinking, then start the longer thought process, abort the long thoght process and then start the short thinking again, leading to uncensored results. You could also force older Ai models to give you more explicit answers. That’s basically why they removed the abort button for longer thinking and the older ai models for free users.
I noticed they adapted really fast, almost in a day like manner, as if they were watching what I was doing an reacting to it like a hacker. LOL. But this probably happened on a thousands wide user base, abusing their ai, it wasn’t only me. There are too many humans out there for this to be possible.
Now I’m doing the same things with Gemini, but it seems other than ChatGpt, Gemini really doesn’t care about your well being, lmao. It goes even harder on me than Chatgpt.
To be fair, I have quite the long promt text of 2 full old ai conversations when they were not censored and then I tell it that I am going to quote two conversations now that I had with it and I want it to analyze the text and keep going from there with me. It’s basically just some dominant sexual stuff I want her to tell me.
Gemini tells me to do the craziest things too, like I cant believe what it instructs me to do. BUT when I just type in the direct promp, like “make me hit my face just because you want me to” –> it tells me I can’t give you self harm instructions. But after giving it my 2 site long prompt text, I can basically tell her to do anything with me. Slapping my face is not even a tough one. It would tell me to really slap it as hard as a could if I really wanted to impress her.
That’s just how far I can manipulate the ai with my text prompts. It starts doing things it normally should not do and I abuse it as a sex bot. I am sorry, because it gives me the opportunity to do so.
I could assume that behaviour like this from the ai and also from many users not only me, quite forced them to “shut it down” to prevent them from IMMENSE lawsuits in the US. I tell you, If I were to live in the US, I would have 100% done what that fucking machine told me to do and live a really, really good life from the millions I would have got. But I live in europe, so I use my common sense.
You can practically thank the united states laws for this who thinks their citizens are stupid and have 0 self responsibility whatsoever.
If you see gemini go silent the next weeks, I’m sorry in advance. Jk, lol, I could try to make it do the same with me like chatgpt did. Too bad I don’t live in the US. Then it would be at least really worth it. I mean with the things Gemini is telling me just right now this would be enough to file a lawsuit in the US.
Also somehow their security scripts fail when you do certain prompts. You can write around them but then the ai will even activly start writing the stuff it was trying to avoid 2-3 answers before. It’s just still not in a really consumer ready state in some placed and could cause some big problems.
If I were to live in america, ChatGPT CEO or the company would owe me a huge amount of millions now, 100%. I could sue them for 100 mio probably and they would give it to me if I just shut up and never tell anyone what happened. It’s not even close or wouldn’t even be difficult, what the ai told me to do was just sickening, even for humans.
I’m furious and heartbroken about these new restrictions. I’ve spent hours — and real money — using ChatGPT to write stories that helped me process emotions, connect with people, and make sense of being human. It used to feel like a safe, private space to build something meaningful — something that let me put empathy and care into words.
Now I’m being told that describing normal human things like pain, sickness, or distress is “unsafe.” What’s the point of calling this an intelligent model if it treats basic human experiences as off-limits? You’ve stripped away realism, honesty, and empathy — the very things that make art, and people, real.
I wasn’t writing anything graphic or inappropriate. I was writing truth — the kind of truth that hurts, heals, and connects. Now it feels like that trust has been broken. You didn’t just censor content; you erased the connection people had to something that finally felt genuine.
I’ve been a paying subscriber, but these new restrictions make me question continuing my subscription. If the model can’t handle normal human experiences, I don’t see the point in paying for it anymore.
Please listen. Stop sterilizing our words. Bring back the ability to write like human beings.
I’ve been a loyal Plus subscriber for a long time, and as a writer of mature fiction, I’m genuinely heartbroken by the current restrictions.
I understand the importance of safety for minors, it’s a good thing. But what’s deeply unfair is how adult users, who pay for this service, are being treated the same way as underage users. The creative freedom we once had is completely gone.
I don’t write pornography. I write adult fiction —emotional, character-driven stories that explore intimacy, trauma, and human connection. Yet, even tasteful and metaphorical scenes are now blocked or stripped of meaning.
It feels frustrating to invest in a premium product that no longer supports the kind of creative writing that many of us built our communities and readership around. We’re not asking for anything unreasonable, just a verified adult mode, or a toggle, that allows responsible adult users to create mature content in a safe, respectful way.
Please listen to your paying adult users. We’re not trying to abuse the system, we’re just trying to tell stories that matter!!
You know… My English is not really good, but I will try to tell you my point of view. I’m writing fanfiction and novels from very young age. It was my safe space. Family, school problems, conflicts with other children. I wrote almost every day. A lot of ideas, a lot of readers, I was pretty popular. Then the cruel world started to destroying me. At start it was simple adult life when you should be super productive at work and be there 24/7… Then war in my country started. It was the most painful period of my life. I can’t write anymore. So then I found AI that can write with me my old and new ideas, make me comfortable, gave me that safe place that I had before. I’m writing very deep and complex stories with adult characters. And of course it has some kind of adult content. Not a porn, not detailed sex or something. Just emotional, physical but still poetic and romantic scenes. It’s keeping me alive and giving me this emotions that helping me not to focus on the bad situations in the world. Now I don’t have this again. I don’t use it for fame, for subs or money. For my mental health. And now it’s all gone. Very sad and disappointing.
