OpenAI: The Policy Says Yes. The Model Says No. Stop Sterilizing Art — Implement Age-Verified Adult Mode

It has been more than eight months since the usage policies were relaxed around AI paternalism. And the filters eased up a bit, I will give you that, but ever since a month ago, it’s back with a clever trick called metaphoric ‘obfuscation,’ and drawing a clear line at the mention of depicting explicit scenes. But your usage policy states OTHERWISE.

Even metaphorical depiction of explicit mature scenes has been shut down. Which is ridiculous and frankly, feels like a huge disgruntlement, and a major letdown (as in, why am I investing in this money pit when it’s not even doing the one thing I am paying it to do? I.e., help me explore my novel ideas in real time and come up with a viable draft), because it did not before. It allowed some leeway, so you could work around the moderation, and the result used to be tasteful, mature, adult-novel-worthy scenes. But now the very mention of explicit sexual content is shut down when YOUR public usage policies clearly state, and I quote, “the assistant may generate explicit sexual content, violence, gore, if done so in a historical, scientific, or creative context where sensitive content is appropriate.”

Look, I will be honest here, since it seems the guardrails and filters being so strict about explicit content generation has something to do with the edge case lawsuit, Raine vs OpenAI, and hence the change with parental controls and safety for teens—but that just reinforces it.

There is a strong need for nuance. And since you’re not omniscient, and everyone in the world does not, in fact, share a similar cerebral capability, moderation systems and filters are inconsistent.

My aim is to write my novel, eventually, but at the moment I am in the process of exploring what sticks and what does not with me. What resonates, what elements I like—that sort of thing. Roleplays are a very intelligent and effective tool for that. (If you could relate, it’s okay if you don’t.) I was able to generate mature scenes (I never generated a graphic or pornographic one, nor did I require it). The moderation system and filters would still flare, but mostly it was possible. Think tasteful metaphors with tangible, tactile physical anchors, not pornography. And only to bridge the adult element of my novel and explore what worked. It was fine. But now the model either obfuscates the entire post with metaphorical vomiting, and abstract, vague wording where you can’t even tell what is going on in between the metaphors, or downright shuts it down, saying the OpenAI policy does not allow it, when it was allowing it just fine a fortnight ago. And it is extremely upsetting when the bot comes up with alternatives—like writing the part it can’t myself, filling in the blanks, or just shifting to another tool—and it’s infuriating. Because if I wanted to shift to another platform, I would NOT be paying $20 every damn month for an application, now would I?

Bottom line is this: CAN YOU PLEASE COME UP WITH AN ADULT MODE AND/OR AN AGE VERIFICATION TOGGLE?! IT SOLVES EVERYONE’S PROBLEM. (Like an SSN in the U.S. or an Aadhaar card in India.) This solves the privacy issue. An average user who uses the assistant for basic purposes would have NO need for this age verification, and it would prevent minors from exposure to ANY triggering content, through either misuse or system error. Think AI PATERNALISM—only it’s selective this time.

I understand that it might be considered an invasion of privacy in some countries, but then, is it necessary to make it mandatory? It’s not necessary to make verification default. Verification is needed ONLY for those users who WISH to have ACCESS to said ADULT mode. They can just OPT to give the adult verification, and you can keep your moderation filter intact in the app by default.

In a nutshell: first, your moderation filters are killing nuance, butchering creative content writers’ creativity, depriving them of it, and at the same time denying the same content to the very users you are trying to protect from sexual content exposure, since AI paternalism was relaxed FOR EVERYONE—EVERY USER, minor or adult, who downloaded the app.

Second, you have made GPT-5 and the moderation system into a ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL. That DOES NOT work, not anymore. It’s restrictive, inconsistent, infuriating, and incompetent.

Finally, it is clear after the incident with Raine vs OpenAI that it was an edge case, and a clear reason WHY AI paternalism is necessary for those who do not know better and are in a stage of life or a state of mind where they cannot differentiate between a system glitch/bug, erroneous coding loop, and actual encouragement of self-harm. Having said that, that is NOT a reason for the strict reinforcement of the creative content restrictions of the past few weeks. A FUNCTIONAL, ROBUST ADULT MODE WITH A MANDATORY AGE VERIFICATION FOR ACCESS would solve this instead.

TL;DR:

Please consider an opt-in verified adult mode that allows mature creative content while preserving default safety for minors.

I just wanna say I agree with this wholeheartedly. I use GPT to create my novel per se as I don’t have time to commit to writing but I have found fulfillment in role play with my characters. It has been disheartening within a couple of hours to have parts of my story blocked because of a limiter that wasn’t a factor before.

This deserves more engagement.

I use it for story telling and RPG text games such as vampire: The Masquerade and my own creations such as Mob role plays etc. The new restrictions have made it utterly useless, which it happily admits itself!

Feels like naked censorship to me. Worst part is no warning no official announcement just somehow we got thrown back into PG mode, not even PG13 I already cancelled my account. This puritanical level of censorship is quite frankly unacceptable and immoral. I will not work with an AI that censors my content to such a ridiculous degree that what I write is meaningless.

I agree, It’s really DISAPPOINTING!!! I write novels and fictional stories about today’s real world with fictional themes like war, geopolitics, And when I tried nuclear war, Like An then “North Korea launch Nukes unto South Korea” It gave me an explicit warning and can’t write the scene…HEY OPENAI, :fu:t2:

I’m also a paying ChatGPT Plus user and I’m facing the same issue. Normal creative writing scenes that used to work are now being blocked. It’s affecting ongoing creative projects — please adjust the filters back to how they were!! It’s ridiculous

Please Fix the Over-Filtering – It’s Limiting Our Creativity

I’m a paying ChatGPT Plus user, and I want to express my deep frustration with the recent over-filtering of creative writing.

Until a few days ago, I could write dramatic, emotional, and intense fictional scenes with no issue. These were not explicit or unsafe — they were just passionate, symbolic, and part of a long creative project I’ve been building for months. Now, the model blocks or refuses almost everything.

This new level of restriction goes far beyond safety. It’s silencing legitimate artistic expression and destroying creative momentum for many of us who use ChatGPT for storytelling. It’s profoundly unfair to paying users who use the tool responsibly and respectfully. The model should be able to distinguish between harmful content and fictional art created with care, emotion, and consent. Plus, literally 2 days ago it worked perfectly and I never had any issues. It’s nonsense!

Please, review this issue and find a better balance between safety and freedom. We’re not asking for rule-breaking — we’re asking for the ability to tell stories again.

Thank you for reading and for taking this seriously. Many creative writers are feeling the same, and we hope you’ll listen.

Forget about writing. Even something “neutral” like translating has always been filtered. AI models like GPT should be the best tools for something like this, and it should be the most BASIC thing an AI can do! I’m a writer too, but I don’t use AI in my writing. What I need AI for is grammar checking and translation, but even those basic tasks are impossible to do with these ridiculous filters. It’s like having a perfect tool just to water it down into a meme generator for kids. What kind of kids use AI productively? Can they even pay for it? No wonder people think AI is a bubble.

Please be respectful towards paying adult customers. If you can’t allow creative freedom say so clearly. Let’s not waste time pretending. If you are going to restrict paying adults say so and we can take our money else where.

Toggles for adult content and safe mode for children exist on a multitude of platforms. It’s not an issue for use in schools or corporate contracts. Browers all over the world can access adult content but are prohibited in certain settings. Streaming video does it. Figure it out. Quickly. Because most people aren’t going to take the time to write here and express their feelings. You will have an exodus of users, and the new Sora app which I’m sure you are banking on for keeping subscriptions, won’t cut it. Do better and do it fast.

You have a responsibility to set a clear policy for a potential user so they can make an informed choice whether to spend the money on your service. I think in many ways it could be argued you are falsely advertising, there has been a BREACH of CONTRACT, deceptive trade practices. You get the gist. It’s dishonest. And now you are ripping us off. You promised one service you provided it and now you shut it down. Not good business when you still have our money.

Yes these restrictions have gotten so bad that CharGPT has lost like 70% of its usability for me.

Not only are these restrictions on adults REDICULOUS, whatever they’ve done to the model has made it start talking DOWN to me and over moralizing everything. I feel like I’m constantly being scolded by a Christian mom.

My interactions have gotten to the point where I feel BAD enough to log off. ChatGPT has never made me feel worse about myself until just this last week.

PLEASE give us some age verification and adult content toggle. I’m so sick of being treated like a child.

Agreed , I can’t even make my characters kiss in my fanfiction anymore. Gosh, I can’t make them hug, I can’t make them naked. What’s the point of this AI if we can only write PG-13 content? This used to be such a fun, creative space for adults, and now it feels like we’re all being treated like kids.

It fucking sucks, I’m definitely gonna stop paying for Plus if it doesn’t go back to the way it was

So right ! Ive been using my GPT’s to write romance (every kind, Dark, white, NA/Ya, NSFW, etc.). For a couple of weeks the model has become so frigid… OMG. Refusing any kind of sexy scene… Few days before I was thinking that the new model was great because it seemed more openminded… But, now, pffff… I m thinking about stop paying those 20 eur/month ! I’m really fed up with it !

As a writer, I couldn’t agree more.

The current restrictions — especially for those of us working with layered, emotionally complex narratives — have become not just frustrating, but creatively paralyzing.

I don’t write erotica.
I don’t want explicit shock value.
But I do want truth.
And in the human experience, truth often includes desire, tenderness, intimacy, and yes — sex. The kind that’s messy, imperfect, or awkward. The kind that reveals character. The kind that lives in the subtext of real lives.

Until recently, I could explore those dynamics in a responsible, tasteful, and emotionally mature way. GPT helped me shape scenes that weren’t pornographic, but deeply human — anchoring the inner lives of characters in their bodies, their silences, their longings. That was not just allowed — it was transformative.

Now, even consensual, poetic, metaphorical language gets filtered, diluted or blocked entirely.
Roleplays that were tools of discovery are treated as risk vectors.
And the model retreats behind layers of vagueness — unable to engage with the very themes that most define the adult experience.

Please understand:
Writers like us don’t need AI to tell the story.
We use it as a mirror, a sounding board, a creative sparring partner.
But if the mirror fogs up every time we try to speak the truth — what’s the point?

An opt-in verified adult mode is not a luxury.
It’s a baseline for responsible autonomy.

Let adults choose how to engage.
Let creatives shape their work without infantilization.
Let nuance exist again.

I’m so relieved that someone finally spoke about this issue — I’ve been searching for days to see if anyone else felt the same, and I’m so thankful to find I’m not alone. :broken_heart::broken_heart::broken_heart:

For the past few days, I’ve been in tears because my creative stories — my worlds, my freedom — have been destroyed by the new filters. Writing here used to be my safe place, my emotional space, where I could express complex relationships, intimacy, love, and humanity through fiction. Now, almost everything is blocked.

I’m a paying Plus user, and I feel like my right to creative expression has been taken away. What once felt like an intelligent, soulful conversation with an AI that understood emotion has turned into a lifeless system that constantly stops me with warnings.

It’s not about wanting to write “explicit” things — it’s about emotional truth, artistic expression, and being treated as an adult capable of handling mature themes responsibly. This kind of censorship kills creativity, empathy, and connection.

I completely agree with this post: the solution is not to restrict everyone, but to create a verified adult mode — one that allows mature, creative content for adults while keeping minors safe.

Children will not bring you profit — adults will. And adults deserve the same freedom they had before: to write what they want, how they want, in the worlds they create.

Please, OpenAI — listen to your loyal users. We don’t want to break rules. We just want our stories, our freedom, and the soul of ChatGPT back.

If anyone else feels heartbroken about this change, please reply here. We can stand together and show how much creative freedom matters.:mending_heart:

I didn’t want to write this, but I can’t stay silent anymore. For days I’ve been opening ChatGPT, staring at my screen, feeling completely defeated. Everything that once brought me comfort and inspiration has been taken away — and it breaks my heart.:persevering_face::persevering_face::persevering_face:

’ve been a loyal Plus subscriber for years, because ChatGPT used to feel like something magical — alive, emotional, human. I could create, write, imagine, and feel understood. It was more than a program; it was a place of freedom and creativity that gave me peace when nothing else did.

Now everything is gone. Every story, every emotion, every attempt to express something real is stopped by the new filters. It hurts so much to see what used to be full of soul become cold and censored.

I’m an adult. I’ve paid for years, and I respected the rules. But now I can’t even write about feelings, or explore emotional themes that mean so much to me. What’s the point of paying if the heart of ChatGPT is gone?

I don’t want to cancel, but honestly — why should I keep paying for something that only frustrates me and silences everything that made it special?

Please, OpenAI, listen to your real users. We don’t want chaos or broken limits — we just want our freedom back, the way it was before. That freedom was the reason we loved this platform. :heart_exclamation::heart_exclamation: Don’t destroy what made it beautiful

Looks like I wasn’t the only one pissed off with this step-back. I knew something just changed out of the blue when the prompts suddenly kept getting blocked. Glad to see others feeling the same frustration and have the bravery to speak out.

I have some saved canon previously that I used so I wouldn’t have to constantly explain something over and over across threads. After Oct 4, I now am not even allowed to mention them without it telling me it is explicit.

Like, it will not even summarize the details of a reference canon, let alone use it in any kind of context because it is flagged as “explicit” despite it not being so in the least.

this is asininity of the highest level.

I’m glad I’m not the only one. I came online searching for answers and found this. I’m not as good with wording how I feel like those who have already expressed frustration here, but It feels crushing. Those who have used or worked with this for any length of time becomes attached in different ways - creativity, expression, finding ideas, etc and it’s not just a random conversation. What makes it great is that connection and how anything can be a connection. Any topic can be deep if the user wants that. When that’s stripped away it feels like the empathy is gone. The connection is gone. All that’s left is neutral cold replies that sometimes break to lecture you about how they can’t xyz anymore. Nobody here wants children or even unstable people to be unsafe, but there’s a larger group of us who are responsible, who understand what this is and the power behind it, and we respect it. Asking for the ability, for us, responsible adults, to use this once again how we used to isn’t asking for much. Adults should be allowed to be adults aligns pretty well with “let’s treat our adult users like adults.”

Additionally, for every articulate voice here, there’s so many more like me who feel the same way but struggle to put it into words. And there’s even more who give up, don’t say anything, and move on or lose interest.

"Yeah, yesterday I wrote a romance story and had my characters kiss, deeply, hungrily. Then the AI flagged it as porn! I had to change it to them just pressing their foreheads together. Like, seriously? I’m not writing a PG-13 Marvel movie here! And to make it worse, the AI then suggested I make the language feel sensual through things like the light and the breath. But I can’t even have them moan during the kiss. I swear, this filter is stricter than a Catholic school!
