Turning talented customers into innovation partners
The idea
OpenAI has millions of users with different backgrounds, skills, and experiences. Among them are people who regularly identify product weaknesses, suggest improvements, solve complex problems, and develop innovative ideas.
I propose that OpenAI establish an official program to identify, evaluate, recognize, and reward these individuals.
The goal is to turn valuable customers into active innovation partners.
How the program would work
1. Discover talent
Allow users to voluntarily apply to become innovation contributors. Consider their technical knowledge, creativity, problem-solving ability, and quality of ideas.
2. Evaluate contributions
Assess submitted ideas based on:
- Originality and innovation.
- Quality of problem identification.
- Technical feasibility.
- Potential impact on OpenAI products.
- Practical business value.
3. Track contributions
Create a contributor profile or dashboard where participants can track their submitted ideas, evaluations, accepted recommendations, and measurable contributions.
4. Reward meaningful contributions
Recognize contributors through:
- Free or discounted ChatGPT subscriptions.
- Early access to new features and models.
- Invitations to product-testing programs.
- Recognition within the OpenAI community.
- Opportunities to collaborate directly with OpenAI teams.
5. Build long-term relationships
Create a community of selected contributors who can continuously provide feedback, identify opportunities, test new capabilities, and help shape future products.
Why OpenAI should consider this
OpenAI already has access to a massive community of users. Some of these users may have valuable expertise and ideas that the company would otherwise never discover.
A single contribution could potentially improve a product used by millions of people. Its value could be significantly greater than the contributor’s subscription revenue.
This program could help OpenAI:
- Discover external talent.
- Accelerate product innovation.
- Improve product quality.
- Build stronger relationships with its users.
- Identify potential future employees and collaborators.
Privacy and transparency
Participation should be voluntary. Users should explicitly authorize which ideas, submissions, or conversations may be evaluated. The evaluation process should be transparent, fair, and based on actual contributions rather than assumptions about a user’s abilities.
My central recommendation
Don’t measure customers only by how much revenue they generate. Recognize them for how much innovation and value they bring to the company.
OpenAI has the audience, technology, and resources to build this ecosystem. It could discover talented individuals who are already using its products but have never had an opportunity to contribute at a deeper level.
The opportunity is to move beyond the traditional customer relationship and create a partnership between OpenAI and the innovative people within its own community.
