Nexus Arcana -> An AI-Infused Personality Test

Hey everyone, announcing a project/product I’ve launched that uses the OpenAI API which I’d really love to strike up a conversation about, get feedback on, hear ideas about, and all that fun stuff

It’s called Nexus Arcana, and it’s an “AI-Infused” personality test

I wanted to see if I could create a personality test where the questions, answers, and results are llm generated, using a hidden and custom point system as a thick wrapper around the Big 5 Personality Index, and then give it a magical theme with its own lore and cosmic beings and other non-sense, AND make the whole thing coherent/meaningful

Turns out that you can, that it’s super cool, and here we are, Nexus Arcana, tada!

(There’s a whole harrowing backstory about my hatred of personality tests, but I’ll save it for now)

Side Note: I am explicitly NOT pushing what I’ve built as a sales pitch here; I care only about conversation here. There are paid elements in the app, but you can ignore those, I freely give access to everyone here.

Anyway, I’d love to hear what people think, I built the whole thing over the past 6 months, learned a lot, would love to answer questions about its construction if anyone has any.

There’s an abbreviated version of the test that’s available to everyone on new login, I’m working on the ability to “gift” the full version of the test atm (coming very soon)

If you find bugs (which there are some) post them here or DM me, I’m always available (and working on improving it lol)

Cheers

More special thanks to @PaulBellow and @thinktank

(can’t tag more than 3 people in a post at time, sadness)

Much appreciation to these 5 for the assist from my initial post!

@Foxalabs, Anon34024923 says my idea is dangerously close to something you’ve had cooking. Would very much love to find out how close

Can you tell me short if user will use API Key on the platform? :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m not sure what you mean by your question.

I think you’re asking if you need to use your API Key for the app? Is that right?

If that is what you’re asking, the user doesn’t need to have their own API keys or anything like that.

This is an interesting concept!

I did find the test a bit fragmented, though. Because of the lore style, I was expecting decisions to relate more directly to the initial prompt, and I anticipated a continuation of the storyline. However, it felt like the flow shifted unexpectedly, as some questions seemed unrelated to what came before.

For example:

Meeting strangers

Writing in a magical book

Losing my voice while giving a speech at a work conference

The third one made me pause as it didn’t seem to connect with the others.

I also found the text at the end a bit unclear. It reminded me of astrology tests that provide a lot of information, but it’s not always easy to make sense of it.

Additionally, I noticed that the Discord link is broken.

It’s a really intriguing idea, though! I’m not sure I’d take the test again right now, but great work so far, and best of luck with the rest of the project!

Would you be interested in building another, similar system? I’m trying to get my work out there. and love your approach. I’ve shared max-core in a post here. love the choice in what i would call core names. i’m more direct label then inventive. except for chuckie core. its an ethical lens and i thought it would be funny to name it after the horror icon.

are you coding or using natural language to build it?

Flame, catalyst, steward. from last choice.
yeah, i like this system. although, you should increase the spectrum of feeling choices with result paths.
you should also include a ‘test results’ link that shows question, response, my system, is more like a physics restrained choose your own adventure system. it also has a “science” mode.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you; these are some excellent words you have for me.

They say the third time is the charm, and you’re the third person to explicitly bring up the expectation of continuity, or at least the feeling of jarred confusion in the lack of its presence

I admit I am most vexed after giving much thought to the question for a graceful design of continuity between the steps in the test

I keep writing, erasing, and rewriting my words for this reply because I think I’m fighting the very strong desire to walk down the path of developing the test as a single narrative continuation which unfolds before it is knowable; it’s a vision I have had for quite some time albeit backlogged

It appears the Fates have caught up to me much sooner for this matter than I believed they would

Thank you VERY much for pointing out the Discord link, it’s been updated with a permanent server invite link now.

On that note, if you wouldn’t mind, join the server, send me a DM, if possible, I would really like to pick your brain and hear your opinions/thoughts about what you feel true continual narration ought to be like. I have some design ideas, but I suspect you will have singular insights

I truly appreciate the invitation. I would be more than happy to talk shop about approaches, I’m an open book in in that way, but my project commitments are maxed out.

I just updated the Discord server link to a permanent one (wasn’t working previously), feel free to hit me up there, DM me, I can always jump on voice whenever (usually)

I’m curious to know what you meant by “you should increase the spectrum of feeling choices with result paths” more precisely.

to quote donnie darko from his own film, Donnie: “Okay. But you’re not listening to me. There are other things that need to be taken into account here, like the whole spectrum of human emotion. You can’t just lump everything into these two categories and then just deny everything else.”

many times, our reactions can’t be boiled down to 4 sets of 3 emotional reactions. i like the set up, but expanding this would reflect a more natural spectrum that matches humanity more accurately. even consciousness can be seen as a spectrum. basically, make it more in depth and nuanced. more options on the emotional reactions. they can trigger same or similar paths, but it will make it feel more immersive and thoughtful.

I see what you mean now. I see your Donnie Darko, and raise you a Jean Luc Picard, “There is a difference between simplicity and naivety, between complexity and wisdom. A system that grows endlessly complex risks collapsing under its own weight. More choices do not guarantee a better system — they create the illusion of control, but too many variables lead to confusion, not clarity. We must trust that our wisdom lies not in how intricate we can make something, but in how elegantly we can balance the needs of the whole. This is why we measure our actions against outcomes, not intentions.”

Quotes aside, there are a handful of technical and systems design reasons why expanding the range of the selectable options would be more harmful than helpful. I can talk about the underlying design decisions and reasons if you’d like, let me know, they won’t be what you’d expect.

That said, there is some work that I know still needs to be done to introduce why there are only 4 selectable answers for the first phase and 2 for the second phase. I really haven’t done a very good job of finding placement for the “instructions” and “how this works” stuff yet. Lots of things going on in other areas.

I kinda figure its limitations in outcomes created.

Is this the thing you were saying before you’re building? Or something different?

the non-pretty version. yeah. its got math, physics and philosophy. treats cores as entities as universes
