Feature Request: “Hey ChatGPT” Native Voice Assistant
I would like to suggest a native, hands-free “Hey ChatGPT” voice assistant for ChatGPT.
ChatGPT already has impressive voice recognition, natural conversation, and voice-generation capabilities. The next step could be bringing those capabilities together into a true phone assistant experience.
Proposed experience
A user could simply say:
“Hey ChatGPT”
and ChatGPT would wake up and listen, without requiring the user to open the app manually.
It could then handle requests such as:
- “Set an alarm for 6 AM.”
- “Remind me to study Polity at 7 PM.”
- “Call Dad.”
- “Send a message to John.”
- “Open YouTube.”
- “Turn on Bluetooth.”
- “What’s on my schedule today?”
- “Navigate me home.”
- “Start a conversation about today’s news.”
The important difference would be that ChatGPT would retain its natural conversational intelligence and context, rather than behaving like a traditional command-only voice assistant.
Why this could be useful
The combination of a wake word + low-latency voice + conversational memory + phone actions could make ChatGPT much more useful as a daily assistant.
For example:
«“Hey ChatGPT, remind me to revise Fundamental Rights at 7.”»
Then later:
«“Hey ChatGPT, what was I supposed to study?”»
ChatGPT could understand the context instead of treating every command as an isolated request.
Important considerations
The feature should include strong privacy controls, including:
- User-controlled wake-word activation
- Clear microphone indicators
- Permission controls for phone actions
- Optional background listening
- Battery-efficient wake-word detection
- The ability to disable the feature completely
- Confirmation for sensitive actions such as calls, messages, payments, or account changes
A “Hey ChatGPT” assistant could potentially combine the convenience of a traditional smartphone assistant with the conversational abilities of modern AI.
This is one of the features
I would most like to see in future versions of ChatGPT.
