Feature Proposal: Make ChatGPT Easier to Resume and More Interactive
Hello OpenAI team,
I genuinely love using ChatGPT, and the more I use it for ongoing projects, research, learning, planning, and creative work, the more I notice a couple of small things that could make the experience significantly better.
I would like to suggest two related features.
1. “Open Last Conversation” as a Startup Option
It would be extremely useful to have a ChatGPT setting that allows users to choose what happens when they open ChatGPT.
For example:
When ChatGPT opens:
-
Home
-
New Chat
-
Last Conversation
The Last Conversation option would automatically reopen the conversation the user was most recently working in.
This would be particularly useful for people who use ChatGPT for ongoing projects. Rather than opening ChatGPT and then having to locate the conversation again, the user could simply continue where they stopped.
An additional option could even be:
Open the last conversation used within the last X days.
This would preserve continuity without unexpectedly reopening an old conversation.
2. Make Individual Sections of a ChatGPT Response Independently Interactive
This is the feature I think could be especially powerful.
When ChatGPT gives a long response containing several distinct ideas, explanations, recommendations, or major points, the entire response is currently treated largely as one unit.
It would be much more useful if individual paragraphs, sections, or major points could be interacted with independently.
For example:
Major Point 1
ChatGPT’s explanation of the first issue.
[
] [
] [Reply] [More]
Major Point 2
ChatGPT’s explanation of the second issue.
[
] [
] [Reply] [More]
Major Point 3
ChatGPT’s explanation of the third issue.
[
] [
] [Reply] [More]
The user could then interact specifically with the part that matters.
For example:
-
“Explain this point further.”
-
“I agree with this.”
-
“This isn’t what I meant.”
-
“Give me examples of this.”
-
“Let’s develop this particular idea.”
-
“Save this section.”
-
“Turn this section into an action plan.”
This would be particularly valuable when ChatGPT provides a long answer containing multiple useful ideas.
Why this matters
Sometimes I may strongly appreciate one particular point in a long ChatGPT response, but the available reaction/reply controls are associated with the response as a whole or are located at the end.
That creates unnecessary friction.
If ChatGPT could understand:
“I’m responding specifically to this part of your answer.”
the conversation could become much more precise and natural.
It could also reduce ambiguity when a user wants to challenge, correct, expand, or continue one particular idea.
An even more powerful version
These two features could eventually work together.
Imagine opening ChatGPT and immediately returning to the project you were working on.
Then, inside that conversation, every major part of ChatGPT’s response could be independently interactive.
The experience would become less like scrolling through a stream of messages and more like working together inside an intelligent, evolving workspace.
For example:
Open ChatGPT → automatically return to my last project → select a specific point in the previous response → continue working specifically on that point.
That would make ChatGPT feel considerably more continuous and context-aware from the user’s perspective.
Possible interaction model
A user could tap or long-press a paragraph and see:
Reply to this
Ask ChatGPT about this
Expand
Simplify
Challenge / Correct
Save
Share
Give feedback
The important distinction is that the action would apply only to the selected passage, rather than the entire response.
Why I think these features are worth considering
ChatGPT is increasingly being used not just for individual questions, but as a place where people:
-
develop long-term projects;
-
learn and study;
-
research;
-
write and edit;
-
brainstorm;
-
make plans;
-
solve problems;
-
maintain ongoing conversations around an idea.
As that happens, continuity and granular interaction become increasingly important.
The first feature addresses:
“Where was I working?”
The second addresses:
“Which part of what you just said am I responding to?”
Together, they could make ChatGPT feel much more like a persistent collaborative workspace rather than a sequence of separate chat messages.
Thank you to the OpenAI team for continuing to improve ChatGPT. I genuinely enjoy using it, and these are features I would personally find very valuable.
I hope the team will consider them for future development.
