Feature Request: Paragraph-Anchored Replies Within the Main Chat
I would like to suggest a change to how users can respond to ChatGPT’s answers.
The basic idea
At the end of every paragraph in a ChatGPT response, add a small reply/comment icon.
When the user clicks it, they can type a normal ChatGPT message.
The message should NOT create a separate conversation, side thread, or branch.
Instead, it should be inserted into the normal main conversation, exactly like any other user message, but it should carry a reference to the specific paragraph that the user clicked.
This would allow ChatGPT to know both:
- The complete context of the main conversation.
- The exact paragraph or passage that the user’s new message is responding to.
Example
USER:
Explain how a Tesla coil works.
CHATGPT:
Paragraph 1 — explanation of the primary circuit.
Paragraph 2 — explanation of resonance. [
]
Paragraph 3 — explanation of the secondary coil.
The user clicks the reply icon next to paragraph 2 and writes:
USER:
So is the magnetic field actually getting stronger, or is it changing direction?
That message goes into the main conversation.
However, ChatGPT receives additional contextual information indicating something like:
This user message is responding to: Assistant response → Paragraph 2
So ChatGPT knows exactly what the user is referring to without the user having to quote the paragraph or explain, “I’m talking about the second paragraph.”
This should NOT create a separate thread
This distinction is important.
I am not suggesting:
Paragraph → separate conversation → separate ChatGPT response
I am suggesting:
Paragraph → anchored user message → normal main conversation
Everything remains in the same chat.
The user’s message appears in the normal chronological conversation, and ChatGPT responds normally.
The only additional information is the relationship between the user’s message and the specific part of the previous ChatGPT response that prompted it.
The paragraph reference should be actual context for ChatGPT
The association should not merely be a visual feature for the user.
It should become actual conversational metadata/context available to the model.
Conceptually:
USER
Original question...
ASSISTANT
Paragraph 1...
Paragraph 2...
Paragraph 3...
USER
[reply_to: assistant_message, paragraph_2]
Why does this happen?
ASSISTANT
Answer...
The model would therefore understand:
“This user message is responding specifically to paragraph 2 of my previous answer.”
while still retaining the entire conversation history.
The original prompt should still remain part of the context
The paragraph should not become the only context.
For example, if I originally asked:
“Explain how Tesla coils work and why they produce such high voltages.”
and then I click paragraph 4 and say:
“But why does the voltage increase rather than the current?”
ChatGPT should have access to:
- My original question
- The complete original ChatGPT response
- The specific paragraph I referenced
- My new question
- The rest of the conversation
The paragraph reference simply gives ChatGPT additional precision about what I’m responding to.
Why this matters
A long ChatGPT response can contain many different ideas.
A user may read paragraph 2 and have a question about it, then read paragraph 7 and have another question, then read paragraph 12 and want to challenge something else.
Currently, all of those responses become ordinary messages at the bottom of the conversation.
ChatGPT then has to infer which part of its previous answer the user is referring to.
The user shouldn’t have to manually provide that information.
The interface already knows exactly what paragraph the user clicked.
That relationship should be preserved and passed to ChatGPT.
The conversation would remain linear
For example:
USER
Original question
CHATGPT
Paragraph 1
Paragraph 2
Paragraph 3
Paragraph 4
USER
[references Paragraph 2]
Why does this happen?
CHATGPT
Answer
USER
[references Paragraph 4]
Does this mean X?
CHATGPT
Answer
USER
Normal message with no paragraph reference
Let's go back to the original question...
Everything remains part of one normal conversation.
There are no separate branches.
There are no isolated side conversations.
There is simply an additional relationship between a user message and the specific part of the ChatGPT response that generated that message.
The relationship could also work with highlighted text
Paragraph-level anchoring would be the simplest implementation, but ideally the user could also highlight a specific sentence or phrase.
For example:
The Tesla coil produces extremely high voltage because the primary and secondary circuits are tuned to resonance.
The user highlights:
“tuned to resonance”
and selects:
Ask about this
The resulting user message would then carry a reference to that exact passage.
This would be even more precise than paragraph-level anchoring.
The reference should remain visible to the user
There could be a subtle indicator next to the user’s message showing what it refers to, such as:
↳ Paragraph 4
Clicking that indicator could take the user back to the exact paragraph.
This would make it easy to understand the relationship between messages without cluttering the conversation.
The key difference from ordinary conversation
The fundamental problem is that chronological order and logical relationship are not always the same thing.
A user may respond to something from five paragraphs earlier.
Currently:
ChatGPT response → User response
doesn’t explicitly preserve what within the ChatGPT response caused the user response.
The proposed feature adds that missing relationship:
ChatGPT response → specific paragraph → User response
while still keeping the user response in the main chronological conversation.
Minimal version of the feature
A first version would only need:
- A small reply/comment icon at the end of each paragraph.
- Clicking it focuses the normal ChatGPT input box.
- The user types a normal message.
- The message enters the main conversation.
- The message carries a reference to the specific paragraph that was selected.
- ChatGPT receives that paragraph reference along with the normal conversation context.
- The user can continue the conversation normally.
That’s all that is necessary.
The core idea
Allow users to send normal messages into the main ChatGPT conversation while attaching each message to the specific paragraph or passage of the assistant’s response that the user is responding to.
This would allow ChatGPT to understand:
“What is this user saying?”
and simultaneously:
“Exactly which part of my previous response are they saying it about?”
without requiring the user to copy, quote, or manually identify the relevant text.
I think this would be particularly valuable for long technical answers, research, education, coding, troubleshooting, studying, and any other situation where ChatGPT produces information-dense responses.
