Make Chat a First-Class Mode Alongside Work and Codex

The new ChatGPT desktop app gives Work and Codex clearly defined, dedicated modes, while ordinary Chat feels more like secondary.

I would like Chat to become a dedicated first-class mode alongside Work and Codex.

Chat serves a distinct purpose that is not fully covered by either of the other modes. Many valuable tasks depend on extended, iterative conversation: exploring an unfamiliar subject, thinking through a decision, studying a paper, refining an idea over multiple turns, or gradually developing shared context with the model. These workflows are neither predefined “work deliverables” nor software-development tasks.

A dedicated Chat mode could provide:

  • A clearly visible Chat entry alongside Work and Codex
  • An interface optimized for long-running, iterative conversations
  • Strong conversation and project organization
  • Easy switching among related chats without reframing them as Work tasks
  • Features supporting learning, discussion, brainstorming, reflection, and collaborative reasoning

The product structure could therefore communicate three equally important interaction models:

  • Chat: think and explore together
  • Work: produce and manage deliverables
  • Codex: build and maintain software

This would preserve conversation as a core product experience rather than positioning it mainly as the lightweight entry point to the more agentic modes.
