The ChatGPT Android app consistently fails to load long conversations when they need to be retrieved from the server after a fresh installation or clearing the app’s storage.
These same conversations can still be opened successfully in a web browser, demonstrating that they remain accessible and have not yet reached the maximum conversation length.
Interestingly, the conversations were previously accessible in the Android app as long as their local data was still available. The problem only appears when the app needs to retrieve the conversation again.
Steps to reproduce:
- Open a long, existing conversation in the Android app.
- Verify that the conversation is accessible.
- Clear the app’s storage or reinstall the app.
- Sign in again.
- Attempt to open the same conversation.
Actual result:
The conversation fails to load, displaying the error message:
“Network connection lost. Attempting to reconnect…”
The app repeatedly attempts to reconnect but never successfully opens the conversation.
Expected result:
The Android app should be able to retrieve and display any conversation that is still accessible through the ChatGPT web interface.
Long conversations should not become inaccessible in the Android app simply because the locally stored data has been cleared.
Additional information:
- Device: Google Pixel 10
- OS: Android 17
- ChatGPT Android app
- Issue is reproducible with long conversations.
- The affected conversations are still accessible through a web browser.
- The issue occurs before the maximum conversation length is reached.
- Clearing the app cache does not resolve the issue.
Impact:
This effectively makes long conversations permanently inaccessible through the Android app after a fresh installation or storage reset, despite those conversations remaining available through the web interface.
It is particularly problematic for users who maintain long-running conversations over weeks or months.
