I have been using one conversation thread for 50 days now and it reached the error you get when the conversation is too large and laggy to keep going, so i would like to keep going by somehow having another conversation thread pick up all the details so i can basically continue chatting IF there is a way.
Workaround; to keep going with your conversation, you need to upload your chat into a new chat:
Option 1:
- Follow the steps outlined in How do I export my ChatGPT history and data? to export your data.
- Locate the desired chat in the downloaded file, copy the text to a new text file (or JSON file), and upload it in a new conversation to continue the chat. Be sure to inform ChatGPT that you want to continue the conversation based on the uploaded file.
- Note: The uploaded file will expire after 15–30 minutes, so you may need to re-upload it if needed.
Option 2:
- Create a custom GPT, upload your previous conversation as a text file to use a knowledge file, and set the instructions to indicate that the chat will continue based on the content of the knowledge file.
- Specify in the custom GPT instructions that the knowledge file contains your previous ChatGPT interactions, and the model should continue the chat based on that file. This eliminates the need to repeatedly upload the file every 15 minutes, as required in Option 1.
Note:
- If your chat history is very long and finding a specific chat is challenging, you can use Chrome extensions to extract only the current chat from ChatGPT. For example, extensions like FancyGPT can help, but there are many options available. Be sure to review their policies and terms regarding the handling of your personal data before using them.
- If you had some image files or other document files you uploaded before, also you should upload them in chat or in custom GPT uploading as knowledge files.
what a hot garbage of an answer
bro just give us a button to copy the whole conversation to clipboard or to export in markdown format
it takes literally a few hours to bake that into chat gpt, and it improves the QOL tremendously
Ctrl A to select all. Ctrl C to copy. Paste in a word doc. then upload that doc to a new conversation.
Search up context pack that has a feature to do what your talking about.
Easy Ways to Export ChatGPT Conversation to PDF / Notion / Google Docs/Gmail,…
After trying everything from manual hacks to tools, here are the most reliable ways to back up and export ChatGPT cleanly:
Use a Browser Extension
There are tons of Chrome/Edge extensions that can export ChatGPT conversations to different formats, for example:
-
Export ChatGPT conversation to PDF, Notion, Word
-
ChatGPT Exporter
-
chatgpt to pdf
-
Convert ChatGPT to Google Doc, Microsoft Word, PDF
Basically: whatever format you want → search it on the Chrome Web Store and you’ll find options.
Print to PDF (Ctrl + P on Windows / Cmd + P on Mac)
For people who don’t want to install extensions and just need a PDF instantly:
-
Open the chat you want to save
-
Press Ctrl + P (Windows) or Cmd + P (Mac)
-
In Printer, choose “Save as PDF” instead of a real printer
Downside: super fast, but the PDF often includes web UI (sidebar, layout bits) and page breaks can look weird. Still fine for quick offline reading.
Use OpenAI “Export Data” (Full Backup)
If you want to back up your entire chat history:
- Go to Settings > Data Controls > Export Data
Downside: you’ll get a .zip containing .json files. It’s raw data—devs love it, normal people will find it annoying to read, and it’s not ready for reports.
Share Link (Fastest for Viewing)
If you just want someone else to view it online:
- Click the Share icon (arrow) on the top right → Copy Link
Note: this is for online viewing only—doesn’t help for offline storage.
