Hello, If I would create website or mobile app which will use chatgpt api, can I name it for example SpaceGPT or any word with GPT in the end? Of course I would not pretend that the app is officially connected with OpenAI, and I would inform that just use their api.
Thank you for reply.
No, you should not use “GPT” in the name of your product or app whether you integrate it with another word or not. As for OpenAI, they do not allow using the ‘GPT’ name in product, app, developer or company names as mentioned in their API documentation. This restriction holds even if you are consuming their API or if you state that your product is not affiliated with OpenAI.

OpenAI overstates their rights.
The company was denied US trademark for GPT, a descriptive industry term widely encouraged to be adopted through open source. Then proceeded to dilute the meaning of the name and who it belongs to (everybody) by creating a sub-product called GPT.
Chatting with a Generative Pretrained Transformer developed by Meta (open weights), Google (originator of the technology), or others by name would have no prohibition, thus a trademark application attempt for ChatGPT also failed. Even “OpenAI” failed in 2016 as there was a prior pending “Open AI” application and both were found to be merely descriptive, and the only hope is to steamroll “GPT” with publicity, use, and lawsuit the same way as “OpenAI” by continuing to act as though the name is proprietary despite no principal register.
It is only in connection with their own services that they can enforce via terms and conditions.
Signaling your unbreakable connection to such a well-known partner or future adversary by product name (which they continue to propagate) simply does not seem like a good decision anyway.
