If I update GPTS, will the instructions in the previous version before the update have any impact?

The subject line is the question. I update GPTs frequently and I’ve sometimes noticed a tendency to do so.

Here’s what happens:

  • Your instructions and tools are instantly updated
  • A new chat will use the GPT, with no “artifacts” from the past

but

  • Any past chats by you or others will continue using the version of GPT instructions that they were started with, as you can see by the warning at the bottom screen of an old chat (one that took me a while to find, as I don’t use or change them much)

New version of GPT available - Continue chatting to use the old version, or start a new chat for the latest version.* - tells you exactly when this behavior is happening.

You can’t change the GPT AI that others thought they were talking with mid-chat on them.
