I’d like OpenAI to allow setting a hard limit as well, since the OpenAI API uses prepaid billing

Current situation

At the moment, it behaves more like a soft limit.

The official article states the following (posted five days ago):

Proposal

Please make it possible to set a hard limit as well.

On the current Billing page, it says: “When your credit balance reaches $0, your API requests will stop working.” This reads as if the behavior is a hard limit.

Allowing users to set a hard limit would also benefit OpenAI. The peace of mind that comes with a hard limit should make users more likely to choose OpenAI.

In closing

I love OpenAI. I’d appreciate it if you could consider this positively. What do you all think?

That would be the best scenario. It used to exist, but no more. And other big AI providers suffer from the same issue.

My guess is that considering the huge amount of requests, the billing gets delayed and many requests would still pass. Often my usage takes some time to get computed on the dashboards.

As an alternative, if you really need this, you can use openrouter with a BYOK setting linking to your openai api key. They have options for setting hard limits on costs, for the compatible models (aka chat completions API).
