I think it would be better to have the code snippet lines numbered, so one can refer to which line.

You could ask for that. It takes a lot of convincing and takes away from understanding the code request itself, so you might ask for this just on completed code.
99.9% would rather paste working code into their line-numbered text editor though. It would make a real mess of AI editing. Like writing in BASIC.
It’s possible the ChatGPT code block container could be written for presentation that way, but it is used for other things. We don’t need to line number ASCII art…
Rather than inline with text, as an optional property of the code block element itself.
