Hot topic sort order being tested here

Hi there,

I just enabled a new sort order here to help with content discovery:

Some of you may also consider changing this to your default sort order at: https://community.openai.com/my/preferences/interface

Or create a custom section in your sidebar for it.

Why hot when we have top?

Hot and top are similar in nature, except that top “brackets” on topics created in a specific date range.

So for example:

Only consider topics created in the past 24 hours.

Often there is lots of discussion on very old topics, and “hot” is able to surface that automatically.

Additionally, hot is much more “automatic” you don’t have to guess a date range, it just works.

The algorithm looks at:

  1. Age of topic
  2. Number of unique people who replied in the past week
  3. Number of unique people who like the topic in the past week (1 like max per person)

All of this goes into a formula where newer stuff gets a bonus and at the end we have the “hot” list.

Let me know what you think and if you see it as helpful.

There is lots of volume here, reading everything is tough, hopefully this gives you more focus.

Thank you Sam! :kissing_heart:

This explains why “Top” can provide funky results sometimes lol.

Should be good to have a “most active, most relevant” for the new visitor who is looking for things of most interest and current issues - and not necessarily plowing through my “1570 unread”.

How are we feeling about this a few weeks later? Should this be the default “home page” sort order.

Overall for new people who land here Hot feels like a far better default.

I believe it shouldn’t. If someone enjoys engaging in hot topics, which are often discussed, then no. Logan states that this site is for OpenAI developers using the API, ChatGPT topics are not the main focus of this site. ChatGPT users typically lean towards discussions. I prefer not to facilitate discussions that don’t aid API developers on this site.

Not following this one Eric.

Anon Hot:

The sora hot discussions are floating up in hot, cause people are quite hot about them. Pretty representative about what is going on now.

The sora topics are floating up but many are closed since SORA is not available to the public. For the last few days most of the sora topics are being closed because users are asking to sign up or creating topics leading others to believe they are sign up topics. These need to be suppressed instead of hoisted.

While this site does allow ChatGPT related questions my understanding is they should not be the main draw for the site.

I would agree that the hot is more representative of topics that users are more actively posting. The question should be “Are these post fulfilling the goal of the site? Are these post of value to the primary users this site wants to attract?” Would really like to hear Logans input, may ask in a meeting if there is time. :slightly_smiling_face:

EDIT

Right after posting this checked the latest topics and there was another topic that was what I consider a false-positive by the triage bot for a user looking to sign up for SORA.

How do you see GPT Builder topics?
It includes the use of ChatGPT, but doesn’t regard it as the main focus?
