Has anyone reset the ChatGPT Windows app while using a custom pet?

Hello,

Has anyone here actually performed a full Reset of the ChatGPT Windows app while using a custom pet?

I specifically mean:

Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps → ChatGPT → Advanced options → Reset

I do not mean Repair, signing out and back in, restarting the app, or installing an ordinary update.

I would like to know what happened afterward:

  • Was the custom pet restored automatically after signing back into the same ChatGPT account?

  • Did the local pet folder under %userprofile%\.codex\pets remain on the computer, or was it deleted by the Reset?

  • If the pet disappeared, was it sufficient to copy a backed-up folder containing pet.json and spritesheet.webp back into the pets directory, refresh the pet list, and select the pet again?

  • Was any additional migration, installation, or account linking required?

If you have actually tested this, please also mention the ChatGPT Windows app version you were using and whether you performed Reset or a complete uninstall/reinstall.

I am currently using ChatGPT Windows app version 26.727.6591.0. I have safely backed up my custom pet’s complete folder, but I do not want to perform a Reset without knowing the tested recovery procedure.

Have you considered testing the reset and recovery procedure in a virtual machine first?

Hyper-V would allow you to create a Windows virtual machine and test the procedure without affecting your primary Windows installation.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I do not have the technical experience to set up and safely operate a virtual machine. I am specifically looking for first-hand experience from someone who has already performed a full Reset of an existing ChatGPT Windows app installation while using a custom pet. I would like to know what actually happened to that pet and its local files afterward.

I was able to transfer my pet from Windows to macOS without any problem. Under Windows go to %userprofile%/.codex/pets and in the user’s home ~/.codex/pets directory under macOS I copied my pet and it was transferred. Just have to choose it from the pets list again.

So, copying the pet in the new %userprofile%/.codex/pets should be fine.
