Green AI UX Pattern — Make AI Not Just Smart, But Aware

Hi OpenAI community,

I’m Azita, currently working as Head of IT in Germany with a Master’s in Artificial Intelligence. As an expat passionate about AI, automation, and sustainable digital transformation, I’ve been exploring ways to make AI usage more responsible—starting with something as simple as user feedback.

Here’s a simple but powerful idea I’m working on:

Before executing GPU-heavy AI tasks, show users a preview of the estimated resource usage.
This includes:
• GPU time
• Energy consumption (kWh)
• CO₂ emissions (grams)

Users then choose: [Proceed] [Eco Mode] [Cancel]

Why this matters:

AI platforms process millions of queries daily, often without users realizing the energy cost behind each task.

For example:
• 1 million AI image generations/day
• Avg. energy per task: ~0.01149 kWh
• If 30% of users opt for Eco Mode (~40% energy savings):
• ~41,370 kWh saved per month
• ~210 metric tons of CO₂ saved per year
• That’s like removing 45+ cars from the road

It’s a small UI upgrade with big potential.

What I’ve built so far:
• Python script to estimate GPU energy and CO₂
• UI mockup for the user-facing resource preview
• Pitch deck and landing page
• Full public repo (please search in
github Azinia/green-ai-ux-pattern)

This project is open-source. I only ask for attribution if it’s adapted or used commercially.

Would love your feedback, ideas, or collaboration!
If OpenAI or others see value in it, I’d be thrilled to help it grow.

Let’s make AI not just smart—but aware.

Thanks for reading!
