When I’ve tried to upload from a connected google drive I’ve encountered this error:
Title:
“Add from Google Drive” Results in “Invalid API Developer Key” Error in ChatGPT
Body:
When using the “Add from Google Drive” option in the ChatGPT file attachment UI, the following error is consistently displayed:
There was an error!
The API developer key is invalid.
This happens immediately after clicking “Add from Google Drive” and prevents users from accessing or importing any files from Google Drive.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Open any ChatGPT thread (Plus / GPT-4).
- Click the
attachment icon in the message box.
- Choose “Add from Google Drive.”
- A white screen appears with an error message:
“The API developer key is invalid.”
Expected Behavior:
The user should be authenticated with Google Drive and allowed to browse and select files from their Drive for upload into ChatGPT.
Actual Behavior:
An error screen is displayed immediately, blocking any file interaction via Google Drive.
Workarounds Tried:
Method | Result | Notes |
---|---|---|
Manual download/upload | ![]() |
Works fine but not ideal for cloud-based workflows. |
Shared Drive link | ![]() |
Requires direct access or integration, which fails. |
Publish-to-web workaround | ![]() |
But this simply bypasses Drive integration; it’s a static web page. |
Environment:
Item | Value |
---|---|
Platform | ChatGPT Web (chat.openai.com) |
Plan | ChatGPT Plus |
Model | GPT-4o |
Browser | Chrome (latest version) |
OS | Windows 11 |
Date Observed | April 6, 2025 |
Request:
I guess it would make sense to investigate the broken Google Drive integration — the error strongly suggests an expired, invalid, or misconfigured API key used in the backend. A fix or official statement would be greatly appreciated, as this impacts cloud-based workflows.
