As ChatGPT Projects continue to evolve, one feature that would dramatically improve usability is the ability to create subfolders (nested folders) inside Projects.
Right now, all conversations inside a project are stored in a single list, while Projects are great, yet they quickly become difficult to manage once they contain dozens or hundreds of chats, which can become overwhelming as projects grow.
Therefor, it would be incredibly useful to have nested folders to keep everything organized.
Why this matters:
Subfolders would provide:
- Better scalability for long-term Projects
- Faster navigation
- Less scrolling through large chat lists
- Clear separation between different workstreams
- Easier collaboration (if shared Projects continue to evolve)
- A cleaner mental model for organizing information
Nice additions
If nested folders are implemented, these complementary features would make them even more powerful:
- Drag-and-drop chats between folders
- Drag folders into other folders
- Unlimited nesting depth (or at least several levels)
- Collapse/expand folders
- Folder colors or icons
- Folder search
- Ability to pin favorite folders
- Folder-level custom instructions (optional but powerful)
- Folder-level file collections so related documents stay together
Why now?
Projects are becoming the primary workspace for many power users. The AI capabilities continue to improve, but organization hasn’t kept pace. Better hierarchy would make Projects feel much closer to a true workspace rather than simply a collection of conversations.
I also noticed multiple community discussions requesting nested folders or sub-projects, which suggests this is a common need rather than an isolated use case.
I believe this would be one of the highest-impact quality-of-life improvements for anyone managing large or long-running Projects.
