Feature Request: Folders for Chats + Nested Subfolders Inside ChatGPT Projects

I would like to suggest an important improvement to ChatGPT’s organization system.

For users who use ChatGPT every day and accumulate hundreds of conversations, the current organization system becomes difficult to manage. Projects are a great improvement, but large Projects can also quickly become cluttered when they contain many chats.

I believe ChatGPT needs a proper hierarchical folder system.

1. Folders for regular ChatGPT chats

Users should be able to create custom folders for their conversations and organize them freely.

Suggested features:

  • Create, rename, and delete folders
  • Drag and drop chats into folders
  • Create nested folders/subfolders
  • Manually reorder folders and chats
  • Move chats easily between folders
  • Collapse and expand folders
  • Search and filter inside specific folders

2. Folders and nested subfolders INSIDE ChatGPT Projects

This is especially important.

A Project should not be limited to one long, flat list of conversations. Users should be able to build a folder structure inside each Project.

For example:

:file_folder: Project: Business

→ :file_folder: Marketing
→ :file_folder: Social Media
→ :file_folder: Advertising
→ :file_folder: Campaigns

→ :file_folder: Finance
→ :file_folder: Reports
→ :file_folder: Planning

→ :file_folder: Development
→ :file_folder: Website
→ :file_folder: Mobile App

Each folder and subfolder could then contain its own relevant ChatGPT conversations.

In other words, I am suggesting a structure like:

Projects → Folders → Subfolders → Chats

For larger Projects, ideally users should be able to create multiple levels of nested subfolders rather than being limited to only one level.

Why this matters

ChatGPT is increasingly being used as a serious workspace for business, research, software development, education, writing, and long-term projects.

As users accumulate more conversations, organization becomes increasingly important.

Search alone is not enough. Users need the ability to create their own logical structure for their work.

A proper folder/subfolder system would make ChatGPT significantly easier to use for long-term and professional workflows.

It would also help transform Projects into true organized workspaces rather than simply containers with long lists of conversations.

Suggested features

  • Chat folders
  • Project folders
  • Nested subfolders
  • Drag-and-drop organization
  • Collapsible folder trees
  • Manual sorting
  • Search within folders
  • Move chats between folders
  • Move chats between Projects
  • Ability to reorganize existing conversations easily

I would strongly encourage the OpenAI ChatGPT Product Team to consider this feature.

If anyone else would find folders and nested subfolders inside ChatGPT Projects useful, please add your feedback to this thread so OpenAI can see how many users would benefit from this functionality.

I would also appreciate a response from OpenAI regarding whether improved chat organization and nested folders inside Projects are being considered for the ChatGPT roadmap.

Thank you.

I strongly support this request. I use ChatGPT Projects as a long-term professional workspace for IT/security operations, infrastructure, compliance, AI development, troubleshooting, and planning. As the number of ongoing conversations grows, the lack of hierarchy inside a Project becomes increasingly difficult to manage.

A simplified example of how I would organize one professional IT/technology Project:

IT Infrastructure & Operations

  • Infrastructure Overview
  • Storage & Network
  • Systems & Tools
  • Endpoint Management
  • Backup & Recovery
  • Microsoft 365
  • Password & Credential Management
  • Incidents & Troubleshooting

Security & Compliance

  • Security Assessments
  • Policies & Governance
  • Vulnerability Management
  • Client / Third-Party Compliance
  • Incident Response

AI & Automation

  • AI Technology Watch & Platform Evaluation
  • Local AI & Compute Architecture
  • AI Agents & Automation
  • AI Governance
  • AI Infrastructure / Lab Builds

Operations & Planning

  • Application & Software Asset Management
  • Vendor Management
  • Work Activity / Timesheets
  • Operating Model & Continuity Planning

I don’t want to create separate Projects for all of these because the workstreams are related, frequently overlap, and benefit from sharing the same parent Project context, files, and instructions. What is missing is hierarchy within that Project.

The recently added organizational options help, but folders/subfolders would provide a much clearer hierarchy for a large, long-running workspace. Even if full nested folders aren’t practical initially, one folder level with drag-and-drop, manual ordering, and collapse/expand would be a major improvement.

I also think the author’s point about reorganizing existing conversations is important. A folder system needs to work with the chats we already have, not just new ones created afterward.

For professional users maintaining Projects over months or years, this would make ChatGPT much more practical as a persistent operational workspace rather than eventually becoming a long list of conversations.

I strongly support this feature request.

As a ChatGPT Plus user, I manage several long-term professional projects, including a woodworking workshop with numerous technical conversations covering machinery, dust extraction, 3D printing, maintenance, and furniture construction.

I need to organize these conversations into thematic subfolders inside a single Project, while maintaining shared project memory and context.

A structure such as Project → Subfolder → Conversations would significantly improve productivity.

Please consider this an additional user request for implementing this feature.

Thank you.
