ChatGPT is already excellent at remembering context within a conversation, but one practical limitation is that it doesn’t reliably know the current local time.
For example, when planning travel, flights, hotel check-ins, reminders, or appointments, I often have to tell ChatGPT what time it is, even though my device already knows this.
Suggested improvement
Allow ChatGPT (with user permission) to access:
- the current UTC time;
- the user’s local time zone;
- optionally the device’s current local time.
This information should only be used when relevant, for example when answering questions like:
- “Should I leave now?”
- “How much time do I have before bag drop closes?”
- “How many hours until my flight?”
- “Will I make my appointment on time?”
Even better
A contextual “assistant mode” could combine:
- current local time;
- calendar events;
- confirmed flights;
- hotel reservations;
- current location (optional);
- live traffic (optional).
This would allow ChatGPT to proactively answer questions such as:
“You should leave within 20 minutes to comfortably make bag drop.”
instead of requiring the user to manually provide the current time.
Privacy
This should be entirely opt-in.
Users who don’t want ChatGPT to access their local time or location can simply keep the feature disabled.
Why this matters
This feels like a relatively small addition with a very large usability impact.
Modern operating systems already know the user’s local time. ChatGPT should be able to make use of that information (with permission) to become a much more practical travel assistant and daily planner without relying on web searches or asking the user what time it is.
I believe this would significantly improve the overall user experience.
