Feature Request: Nested Projects, In-Chat Filing, and User-Controlled Chat Titles

I use ChatGPT extensively for ongoing projects, and I would like more direct control over how conversations are organized.

I would like to suggest the following related improvements to Projects and chat organization:

Nested Projects / Subprojects

Allow a main Project to contain smaller subprojects.

For example:

Bedroom Makeover

• Gallery Wall

• Bedding

• Nightstands

• Closet / Dressing Room

Each subproject could contain its own chats while still belonging to the larger Project and, where appropriate, sharing or inheriting the parent Project’s instructions, files, and context.

This would make Projects function more like a true workspace instead of a flat collection of chats.

Move or Add a Chat to a Project From Inside the Chat

While I am actively working in a conversation, I would like an “Add to Project” or “Move to Project” control within the chat itself.

Ideally, I could also simply tell ChatGPT:

“Move this chat to Bedroom Makeover > Gallery Wall.”

ChatGPT could show me the destination, I could review and approve it, and then the chat would be filed there without my having to leave the conversation.

This is different from the existing workflow of going back through chat history later and manually deciding where conversations belong. I would like to be able to organize a chat while I am actively using it and while I still remember exactly where it belongs.

Assistant-Controlled Chat Renaming With User Approval

ChatGPT can continue generating and updating automatic conversation titles normally, but I would like to be able to tell the assistant the exact title I want for the current chat.

For example:

“Rename this chat Bedroom Gallery Wall - Tango Artwork.”

ChatGPT could show me the requested title change, let me review and approve it, and then use that exact title.

Once a user explicitly provides or approves a title, that exact title should take precedence over automatic naming and remain unchanged unless the user chooses to rename it again.

Optional Lock or Pin for User-Approved Titles

It would also be useful to have an optional way to lock or pin a manually approved chat title so that automatic title generation cannot replace it later.

The overall goal is not simply to add more folders. It is to make Projects behave more like a true working environment where organization can happen naturally while I am working.

A concrete example of the ideal workflow would be:

While working in a conversation about artwork for my bedroom, I could say:

“Move this chat to Bedroom Makeover > Gallery Wall and rename it Bedroom Gallery Wall - Tango Artwork.”

ChatGPT would show me the proposed destination and title, I would approve them, and the chat would be organized and renamed without my having to leave the conversation and reorganize everything manually afterward.

These features together would provide:

• Hierarchical organization through Projects and subprojects

• Shared or inherited parent Project context where appropriate

• In-chat filing and movement of conversations

• Natural-language organization commands with an approval step

• Exact user-controlled chat titles

• User-approved titles that override automatic naming

• An optional lock or pin for permanent titles

The main goal is to give users more direct control over the structure and naming of their ChatGPT workspace while still keeping the convenience of automatic organization.

I could simply ask:

“Find everything we’ve discussed about the bedroom gallery wall.”

That should bring back the relevant conversations, decisions, files and branches, regardless of what I called them or which Project I put them in.

Folders, subprojects, naming rules and pins are useful tools, but they are still asking the user to become the filing clerk.

The real solution is contextual understanding of our conversation history.

I want to spend my time thinking with ChatGPT, not organising ChatGPT.

I asked for subprojects in July. One flat list gets hard to use when each workstream has its own research and follow-up chats.

I’d like nested Projects, a clear breadcrumb, and a visible choice of which parent instructions and sources are inherited. That would help me organize work without guessing which context a chat is using.
