Feature Request: Native Video Generation & Editing in ChatGPT as a Premium/Pro Capability

I found and supported the previous community request regarding restoring and improving Sora/video access within ChatGPT. That discussion was closed on June 15, 2026, so I would like to expand on the concept with a broader proposal focused on native conversational video generation, video editing, organization, and premium-tier integration directly within ChatGPT.

The Core Idea

I believe ChatGPT should eventually support video in much the same way users can currently work conversationally with images.

Instead of requiring users to leave ChatGPT, open another application, learn another interface, transfer their files, and continue their work elsewhere, a user could simply upload or generate a video and tell ChatGPT what they want done.

For example:

  • “Create a video from this concept.”
  • “Make this scene longer.”
  • “Remove this object from the video.”
  • “Change the background.”
  • “Turn these images into a video.”
  • “Use this image as the character reference.”
  • “Create a shorter version for social media.”
  • “Add captions.”
  • “Improve the video quality.”
  • “Change the camera angle or movement.”
  • “Continue this scene for another ten seconds.”
  • “Create three variations of this scene.”

The important feature would be the conversational interface. Users should not necessarily have to become professional video editors to perform useful video-editing tasks.

Potential Capabilities

A native ChatGPT video environment could eventually include:

  • Text-to-video generation
  • Image-to-video generation
  • Video-to-video transformation
  • Editing uploaded videos
  • Adding or removing objects
  • Background replacement
  • Scene extension
  • Clip generation from longer footage
  • Video enhancement
  • Captions and subtitles
  • Camera/framing adjustments
  • Scene variations
  • Combining multiple clips
  • Maintaining character or subject consistency
  • Using existing ChatGPT images as video references
  • Maintaining context across multiple revisions
  • Video folders, projects, or collections
  • Version history so users can return to previous edits

Integration With the Existing ChatGPT Workspace

The greatest advantage would be integration.

A user might begin by discussing an idea with ChatGPT, research it, write a script, generate character or product images, create a storyboard, generate the video, edit it, create captions, produce different versions for different platforms, and organize the finished material—all within the same project and conversational context.

ChatGPT would become the interface connecting the different stages of the creative process.

Pro / Premium Opportunity

Video generation and editing can require substantially greater computational resources than ordinary text interactions.

Rather than making every advanced video capability universally available, OpenAI could potentially use video as an additional Pro or premium subscription differentiator.

For example, different subscription levels could receive different:

  • Generation limits
  • Video lengths
  • Resolutions
  • Editing capabilities
  • Processing priorities
  • Storage allowances
  • Project limits
  • Advanced creative tools

This could help align the computational cost of video with subscription revenue while providing consumers with a meaningful reason to upgrade.

Why This Could Benefit Users

Consumers currently need multiple applications for tasks such as AI assistance, image generation, video generation, video editing, captions, organization, and other creative work.

Bringing more of those capabilities into ChatGPT would mean:

  • Fewer applications
  • Fewer disconnected workflows
  • Less transferring of files between services
  • Less need to learn multiple interfaces
  • Better project continuity
  • Better organization
  • Greater value from a ChatGPT subscription

Why This Could Benefit OpenAI

There is also a broader business opportunity.

Every time a ChatGPT user must leave the platform to complete the next stage of a project, another application has an opportunity to capture that user’s attention, workflow, and potentially subscription revenue.

Allowing users to complete more of their creative process inside ChatGPT could potentially increase:

  • User retention
  • Platform engagement
  • Subscription value
  • Premium-tier differentiation
  • Reasons to upgrade
  • Long-term creative use of ChatGPT

Safety and Responsibility

More powerful creative capabilities should still be accompanied by appropriate safeguards.

Video tools could incorporate appropriate protections concerning minors, non-consensual intimate material, impersonation/deceptive media, privacy, intellectual property, and other seriously harmful or unlawful uses.

Advanced capabilities could also be accompanied by appropriate user terms, provenance measures, account controls, and age assurance where necessary.

The objective does not need to be unrestricted video creation.

The objective should be greater capability with proportionate responsibility and safeguards.

Long-Term Vision

My broader recommendation is for ChatGPT to continue developing toward a unified AI environment where users can move naturally between:

Text → Voice → Files → Images → Video → Organization → Finished Projects

Specialized professional applications will still have their place. ChatGPT does not necessarily need to replace every specialized tool.

But for everyday consumers and creators, there is substantial value in having one intelligent interface capable of understanding the entire project and helping complete increasingly large portions of it.

The goal would be simple: allow users to accomplish more without having to leave ChatGPT, while using premium tiers to sustainably support the most computationally demanding capabilities.
