[Feature Request] [Desktop App] Option to set default external browser link behavior (Bypass internal WebView)

Problem Statement

When clicking external links, the ChatGPT Desktop App opens them in its integrated WebView rather than the user’s OS default browser. Even though the internal WebView supports extensions, forcing users to interact with web content inside the app forces them to maintain a secondary browser environment.

Why the Current UX Fails Power Users

  • Duplicated Setup & Friction: Users must log in to all their web applications twice (once in their primary browser, once in the app’s WebView) and re-configure password managers, 2FA tokens, and browser profiles.

  • Violation of OS Standards: Standard desktop app conventions dictate delegating link handling to the system’s default browser. Forcing an embedded browser view by default interrupts power-user workflows.

  • Unnecessary Click Path: Moving a link out of the desktop app to a primary browser requires closing the side panel, right-clicking the hyperlink, and selecting “Open in External Browser.” Repeating this dozens of times daily creates constant UI friction. I’m not going to remember that links in ChatGPT work differently than links everywhere else - I’m just going to follow the roundabout UX every time.

Proposed Solution

Add a preference toggle under Settings > General:

Link Behavior:

  • [ ] Open links in ChatGPT internal browser

  • [x] Open links in OS default browser

Impact

  • Productivity: Eliminates secondary environment maintenance and redundant 3-step right-click workarounds.

  • Security & Convenience: Allows users to leverage their existing active browser sessions, authenticated cookies, and security extensions seamlessly.

I wholeheartedly agree with all points. I just came here and created an account explicitly to request this feature.

I would really like this option too. Links from my chats now open inside the ChatGPT app, and I find it difficult to view the information properly. I want them to open directly in my usual browser.

Having to right-click each link or copy and paste it adds unnecessary steps. It is extremely frustrating when something that used to be straightforward now requires a workaround.

The new interface already makes it harder for me to find my chats and projects in the order I expect. This browser behaviour adds to that frustration, and I’m finding myself more reluctant to use ChatGPT for certain tasks.

Please add a setting that lets us choose to always open external links in our default browser.

I’ve shelved GPT for this for now. It’s just obnoxiously invasive. Not a good move when the competition is already ahead on several fronts.

I also would really like to see this implemented as well. Drives me nuts! I usually use the app on half of my monitor screen alongside my browser, and the in-app browser is completely unreadable/compressed immediately after clicking the link.

Please! This is an easy fix :folded_hands: let your users decide how they browse the web. We promise we will always come back to your app. Don’t force us to login twice

I fully support this feature request.

Please add an option in the ChatGPT desktop app settings to enable or disable the built-in browser.

  • Enabled: Links open inside ChatGPT’s integrated browser, as they currently do.

  • Disabled: Clicking any link automatically opens it in the user’s default system browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.).

This should be a simple toggle that allows users to choose their preferred behavior.

Personally, I prefer using my default browser, where I’m already signed in to my accounts and have all my extensions, bookmarks, and settings configured. I don’t want to manage separate login sessions inside ChatGPT.

Please give users the freedom to choose instead of forcing the integrated browser.

Thank you!

Turns out there is a setting for this, its just in the settings for the internal browser itself and not in the general app settings. Open a tab>three dot menu>browser settings at the bottom. Link behavior are the top two options.
