Feature Request: Continue an Existing Chat in a New Conversation With Its Context

Hello,

I would like to suggest a feature that could be very useful for users who work on long conversations or long-term projects in ChatGPT.

At the moment, when a conversation becomes very long and I want to continue the same work in a new chat, it can be difficult to keep all the important context from the original conversation.

Over time, a chat can contain a lot of useful information such as:

  • instructions given by the user
  • decisions made during the conversation
  • corrections
  • preferences
  • project structure
  • current progress
  • files or documents related to the project
  • important details that were established many messages earlier

Because of that, starting a new chat can sometimes mean having to explain everything again or manually check that ChatGPT still understands all the previous decisions.

I think it would be useful to add a feature such as:

“Continue in a new chat”
or
“Transfer conversation context”

For example, this option could be added to the ... menu of an existing conversation, next to options such as Rename, Pin, Archive, etc.

When selected, ChatGPT could create a new conversation while transferring the relevant context from the original chat.

Another possible version would be to add an option inside New Chat called something like:

“Continue from an existing conversation”

The user could then select one of their previous chats to use as context for the new conversation.

It could also offer different options, for example:

  • Transfer all relevant context
  • Generate an optimized context summary
  • Select which information should be transferred
  • Include related files if needed

This would be especially useful for long-term projects, guides, research, writing, troubleshooting, or any conversation that lasts for weeks or months.

In my own case, I am working on a very detailed game guide in ChatGPT. The conversation contains many decisions, corrections, formatting rules, and information accumulated over time. When the chat becomes too large, moving to a new conversation without losing important context becomes difficult.

I think a built-in conversation continuation or context-transfer feature would make long-term use of ChatGPT much smoother and more reliable.

I attached a small edited screenshot to show where this option could potentially be added in the interface.

Thank you for reading.

Hey @YukyNalu!

Your game guide example shows the gap well. A Project can keep related chats, files, and instructions together, but starting a new chat does not automatically carry over every decision, correction, formatting rule, and progress update from the original conversation.

A Continue in a new chat option could make that transition much easier. The choices you suggested, such as generating an optimized summary, selecting what should transfer, and including relevant files, would also give users more control over the new conversation’s context.

I cannot promise when or whether something like this will be added, but I will pass the feedback along internally.
