Feature Request: Context-Aware Animated Loading Indicators in ChatGPT

Hello OpenAI team,

I would like to suggest a feature that could make waiting for ChatGPT responses and image generation more engaging, informative, and visually appealing.

The idea: replace or complement the current animated loading indicator with small, context-aware animated characters or scenes.

Instead of displaying the same abstract animation for every task, ChatGPT could show a short animation related to the subject of the conversation or the operation being performed.

For example:

  • Occupational health and safety: a worker putting on a safety helmet.
  • Physical risks and mechanical vibrations: an excavator digging and visibly vibrating.
  • Noise measurements: a technician using a sound level meter.
  • Chemical risks: a worker safely handling a sample while wearing appropriate protective equipment.
  • Image generation: a small artist painting a picture or assembling a miniature scene.
  • Construction and engineering: a character building a wall or assembling furniture.

Adaptive animations

The animations could change according to the context of the conversation, making the waiting experience feel more relevant and personal.

For example, if a user is studying whole-body vibration exposure, a small animated excavator could appear, with subtle movements illustrating the vibrations being discussed.

The animations could also have a short finishing sequence when the response is almost ready. For example, a cyclist could accelerate towards a finish line, or a construction worker could complete the final step of a task.

Suggested implementation

  • Keep the animations small, lightweight, and unobtrusive.
  • Use simple 2D animations or lightweight 3D models.
  • Adapt the animation to the conversation topic when appropriate.
  • Avoid displaying misleading progress percentages if the actual processing progress cannot be measured reliably.
  • Respect accessibility preferences, including reduced-motion settings.
  • Allow users to disable the animations or retain the existing loading indicator.

The purpose would not simply be to decorate the interface. It would be to make waiting more enjoyable while reinforcing the context of the task being performed.

I believe this could be particularly useful for education, technical work, creative tasks, and image generation.

Thank you for considering this suggestion.
