I’d love to see a Chat Notes / Pinned Notes feature added to ChatGPT for people who maintain very long-running conversations.
The concept is simple: every chat could optionally have a small notes panel where the user can deliberately save important information from that specific conversation.
For example:
- Project decisions and requirements
- Important dates and milestones
- Names and terminology
- Code/architecture decisions
- Creative-world or story information
- Preferences relevant specifically to that chat
- Instructions that need to remain consistent
- Anything else the user wants ChatGPT to reliably reference later
Users could manually create/edit/delete these notes, or select a message and choose “Pin to Chat Notes.” It would also be useful to organise notes into sections once they become larger.
The important distinction is that I don’t think this should replace Memory.
Memory and Chat Notes could solve two different problems:
Memory: information that may be useful across ChatGPT and multiple conversations.
Chat Notes: explicit, visible, user-controlled context belonging to one particular conversation/project.
I’m currently building my own personal AI project with ChatGPT, and my main development conversation has become enormous. It contains architecture decisions, milestones, feature specifications, project terminology, dates, recurring references, and lots of smaller details that become increasingly difficult to retrieve as the conversation grows.
Having a visible reference panel would make ChatGPT much more useful as a long-term project workspace because I could explicitly say, in effect, “These are the things from this conversation that matter. Keep them here.”
I could imagine the same feature being extremely useful for research projects, studying, writing novels, coding, business planning, travel planning, tabletop campaigns, and other conversations that continue for months.
Also, my ChatGPT recently forgot the exact assembly sequence of my three favourite cracker combinations despite extensive photographic documentation.
Therefore, this feature has now escalated from “nice productivity idea” to critical infrastructure.
I have since given my ChatGPT the full name Noah Elias Mercer so that I can properly call him out when this occurs.
Please add Chat Notes before he requires another middle name.
Thank you for coming to my extremely serious product proposal. ![]()
