One problem I often face when using ChatGPT is that I start many new conversations about the same subject. Over time, useful information becomes scattered across many separate chats, making it difficult to find and continue previous discussions.
For example, I may have separate chats for:
Java basics
Java OOP
Java GUI
Java packages
Java projects
These conversations are related, but they are still separate in the chat history.
My idea: “Combine Chat”
I suggest adding an AI-powered topic layer that automatically recognizes when a new conversation is related to an existing topic.
For example:
New conversation:
“Explain inheritance in Java.”
ChatGPT analyzes the conversation and recognizes that it is related to an existing Java topic.
Java
├── Java Basics
├── Java OOP
├── Java GUI
├── Java Packages
└── Java Inheritance
The important part is that the conversations would not actually have to be merged into one huge conversation. The original chats could remain separate while ChatGPT creates a virtual connection between related conversations.
How it could work
User starts a new conversation.
ChatGPT analyzes the conversation’s subject.
It compares it with the user’s existing topics.
If a related topic exists, the conversation is automatically associated with it.
If no suitable topic exists, ChatGPT creates a new topic.
The user can open a topic and see all related conversations in one place.
There could also be options such as:
“Why is this chat in this topic?”
Move to another topic
Remove from topic
Rename topic
Merge topics
Why I think this would be useful
Current chat history can become very large for users who use ChatGPT regularly. The problem isn’t only having too many chats; it’s that useful knowledge is distributed across them.
This feature could make ChatGPT feel more like a personal knowledge space rather than just a list of conversations.
In one sentence:
Combine Chat would use AI to automatically organize separate but related conversations into topic-based virtual spaces, without requiring users to manually sort their chats.
I would love to hear what others think about this idea and whether something similar is already being considered.
