Feature Request: Add a “Pause & Take Control” Button for Remote Computer Use

As an extension of secure multi-device computer access in ChatGPT, I would like OpenAI to add a feature that allows the user to temporarily pause ChatGPT’s computer control and manually take control of the remote computer themselves.

If ChatGPT is working on another authorized Mac using computer-use capabilities, there should be a prominent “Pause & Take Control” button.

Pressing this button would immediately pause ChatGPT’s actions without closing the session, losing its place, or disconnecting from the remote computer.

The user could then manually control that Mac remotely through the same ChatGPT interface.

Example

Suppose I am using my MacBook and ChatGPT is working on my desktop Mac at home.

I ask:

“Open my land project on my desktop Mac, find the relevant files, organize them, and update the spreadsheet.”

ChatGPT begins working remotely.

During the process, I notice something on the screen that I want to handle personally.

I could press:

:pause_button: Pause & Take Control

ChatGPT would stop clicking, typing, or performing actions, but the remote session would remain connected.

I could then use my mouse and keyboard on my MacBook to directly control the desktop Mac.

When I am finished, I could press:

:play_button: Resume ChatGPT

ChatGPT would regain control, recognize what I changed while I was manually controlling the computer, and continue the task from the current state.

The Remote-Control Toolbar Could Include

:pause_button: Pause ChatGPT
Immediately stop ChatGPT from interacting with the computer.

:computer_mouse: Take Control
Give the user direct mouse and keyboard control of the remote computer.

:play_button: Resume ChatGPT
Return control to ChatGPT and allow it to continue the task.

■ Stop Task
End ChatGPT’s computer-use session completely.

:counterclockwise_arrows_button: Refresh Context
Have ChatGPT examine the current screen and determine what changed while the user had control.

ChatGPT Should Understand What Happened During the Pause

This feature would be much more useful if ChatGPT did not simply resume from its previous assumptions.

When the user returns control, ChatGPT should inspect the current state of the computer and understand things such as:

  • Which windows were opened or closed

  • Which files were moved or edited

  • Which application is currently active

  • Whether the user completed one of the steps ChatGPT was going to perform

  • Whether the user changed a setting or selection

  • Whether new information appeared on the screen

ChatGPT could then say something like:

“I see that you selected the correct project folder and opened the lease spreadsheet while I was paused. I’ll continue from here.”

It Should Work Across Authorized Macs

This would become particularly powerful when combined with multi-Mac access.

For example:

MacBook → ChatGPT → Desktop Mac

I could be away from home using my MacBook while ChatGPT is accessing my desktop Mac.

Instead of needing a completely separate remote-desktop application, I could temporarily take control of the desktop directly through ChatGPT whenever human judgment or manual interaction is needed.

Then I could hand control back to ChatGPT.

There Could Also Be an “Ask Me to Take Over” Feature

ChatGPT itself should also be able to request a manual handoff.

For example, if ChatGPT encounters something that it should not handle automatically, it could display:

Human input required

“I’m at a step that requires your judgment. Would you like to take control?”

Buttons:

Take Control

Tell ChatGPT What to Do

Cancel Task

This could be especially useful for:

  • CAPTCHA or human-verification screens

  • Sensitive confirmations

  • Selecting something visually ambiguous

  • Entering information the user does not want ChatGPT to handle

  • Reviewing something before submission

  • Approving a purchase or transaction

  • Making judgment calls

  • Handling unusual application behavior

Security and Safety

The user should always have priority over ChatGPT’s control of the computer.

If the user moves the mouse, presses a keyboard shortcut, or selects Pause, ChatGPT should immediately stop interacting with the computer.

There should also be a clear visual indicator showing who currently has control:

ChatGPT has control

or

You have control

There should never be uncertainty about whether ChatGPT or the user is operating the computer.

Optional Instant-Takeover Shortcut

It would also be useful to have a universal keyboard shortcut such as:

Command + Shift + Pause

or another configurable shortcut that immediately suspends ChatGPT computer control and transfers control to the user.

This would function almost like an emergency override.

Why This Matters

Computer-use AI is significantly more useful when the relationship between the human and AI is collaborative rather than all-or-nothing.

There will always be situations where ChatGPT can perform 95% of a task, but the user wants to personally handle one small portion.

Users should not have to terminate the entire computer-use session just to intervene.

The ideal workflow would be:

ChatGPT works → User pauses → User takes control → User makes a change → ChatGPT observes the new state → ChatGPT resumes.

Combined with secure multi-Mac access, this could turn ChatGPT into a much more capable computing assistant while still ensuring that the user always remains in control.

Could this include one Pause/Resume for every task accessing my Mac, Local or Cloud with local access? When changing location, I need to close the laptop, let it sleep, then continue from the same point. Closing each session individually is really inconvenient.

During calls or screen sharing, I also need to pause all Computer Use/Chrome activity, release control and clear automation/debugging UI. Show “stopping” until all local access is paused, preserve completed/pending/uncertain outcomes, then resume only on my click after checking the current state to avoid repeating actions. Cloud-only work could optionally continue.
