Excessive Bullet Point Formatting Issue in ChatGPT Responses

Hello,

I would like to report a recurring issue with ChatGPT regarding its excessive use of bullet points in responses. This becomes particularly problematic when asking the tool to draft structured texts such as letters, messages, or narrative documents.

ChatGPT tends to insert bullet points or format ideas this way even when it’s not appropriate for the context or the specific request. For example, when drafting a formal letter or a fluid piece of writing, the use of bullet points disrupts the natural flow and is sometimes inconsistent with the intended tone.

Issues encountered:

  1. Lack of fluidity: Bullet points often break the narrative or argumentative structure, especially in formats where continuous text is expected.
  2. Contextual mismatch: Even in contexts where paragraphs are explicitly requested, ChatGPT sometimes includes bullet points.
  3. Time wasted: Users frequently need to ask for reformulations or manually adjust the content to remove bullet points.

Suggestions for improvement:

*Reduce the use of bullet points in responses when they are not necessary or suitable for the context.

  • Improve contextual understanding to adapt the response format to the user’s request.
  • Add an explicit option to systematically provide responses in paragraph format (e.g., via a parameter or specific command).

Thank you for considering this request, as this behavior sometimes limits the fluidity and usefulness of ChatGPT’s responses.

Best regards,
Sam

Same issue happens with the new 5.2 ChatGPT. I asked it to draft an email and it returns bullet points constantly.

Agree. I hope this is seen and fixed!

Yes, this problem is very annoying

I usually use chatGPT to help me brainstorm an idea, but they keep answers in bullet points, like more than 10 bullets all doomscrolling to the bottom.

The problem is not that i don’t like bullet point, but i want my information are digestable and make everyting bullet points didn’t help that

At this point chatGPT almost useless for brainstorming.

The answer is overwhelmingly painfully long bullet lists of trash with no value.

It’s not digestible; it tries to cover every possible angle; it tries to answer everything.

Hey @kdoplay, thanks for flagging this.

A couple quick questions so we can pass along the right details:

1. What are you ultimately trying to accomplish, in your own words?

2. What do you do today instead, and what about that isn’t working for you?

3. If we solved this perfectly, what would be different for you or your team?

Appreciate any extra details you can share. They’ll help us reproduce it and get it in front of the right folks.
