Feature Suggestion: Better Chat Organization and Study Management
I am a long-time ChatGPT user, and I would like to suggest an improvement to chat management, especially for students and users who keep long-term conversations.
The Problem
When someone uses ChatGPT for studying, a single conversation can become very long. The conversation may contain useful explanations, notes, examples, corrections, questions, and revision material, but it can also contain unrelated messages, corrections, misunderstandings, or ordinary conversation.
Over time, the useful information becomes buried inside the conversation. The user may not want to delete the conversation because it still contains valuable information, but finding that information again can become difficult.
My Suggestion
I suggest adding a more advanced chat-organization system with two complementary features.
1. Study/Knowledge View
Allow users to select useful messages from an existing conversation and organize them into a separate collection or study space.
For example, a student could have:
NDC English Grammar
-
Nouns
-
Verbs
-
Clauses
-
Tenses
-
Common mistakes
-
Important examples
The original conversation would remain unchanged, while the selected useful information would be available in a cleaner, organized format for revision.
An optional AI-powered feature could also identify potentially useful study material automatically and suggest organizing it into relevant sections.
2. User-Created Chat Categories
Allow users to manually organize entire conversations into categories such as:
-
Study
-
Projects
-
Programming
-
Personal
-
Research
-
Important
A conversation could potentially belong to more than one category.
For example:
English Grammar → Study + Important
This would make it much easier to manage a large number of conversations.
3. Hide/Archive Instead of Delete
Users should also be able to hide or archive conversations without permanently deleting them.
There should be a clear distinction between:
Delete → permanently remove the conversation.
Archive/Hide → remove it from the main chat list while keeping it available.
Categorize → organize it into a user-defined collection.
This would prevent users from having to delete conversations simply because they do not currently need them.
Why I Think This Would Be Useful
This would be particularly valuable for students, researchers, programmers, and long-term ChatGPT users.
For students, ChatGPT conversations can effectively become personal textbooks. However, unlike a textbook, the useful information is mixed together with the process of asking questions and correcting mistakes.
A system that lets users preserve the original conversation while extracting and organizing the valuable parts would make ChatGPT much more useful as a long-term learning tool.
The key idea is:
Don’t force users to keep a conversation perfectly organized from the beginning. Let them organize and extract the valuable information afterward.
Thank you for considering the suggestion.
