Enable custom websites to use API calls with logged-in user's OpenAI account

The GPT-Builder and its resulting GPTs are great, but some applications call for more flexibility. Can you enable custom web pages to make OpenAI API calls using the user’s OpenAI account, as is done with GPTs?

No. Technically it could be done if they allowed it, but that would lessen the value of their ChatGPT ecosystem… or add value to it depending on who you ask.

What did you have in mind?

Clearly the GPT UI design cannot meet the needs of all AI-powered apps (nor should it try). Custom apps should be able to choose between paying for all OpenAI API calls on behalf of the user or allowing the user to use his own account for the cost of the calls.

I think that’s one of the “perks” of ChatGPT Custom GPT… you don’t pay for the API and get a check at the end of the month? In exchange, you give up control over data, etc.

They do have Assistants API too, but it’s hard to replicate ChatGPT 100% as there’s likely “special sauce” they keep secret as long as they can to be ahead of competition.

Good thoughts, though!

Offloading the cost of ChatGPT to the user instead of the app owner paying for the API calls makes total sense. It forces the app user to decide whether they want to live with the limits imposed on them by ChatGPT or upgrade to the Pro version for more access.
