Do Chats Within a Project Share Context?

Hi,
I’ve created a Project to work on a specific task. I assumed that every chat inside the folder would share data and info across all new chats, but in my test, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Am I wrong?

If ChatGPT can’t reference all chats within the project, I honestly don’t understand what the purpose of this feature is supposed to be.

After some testing, I can answer myself: definitely not and that’s a big limitation.

Yes, it’s a major disadvantage to create projects that can’t share context between chats. What I do is share the entire chat in the new conversation to provide it as “context”.

I had to restore my project-related chats so I can refer to them just by their names. What I’d really like is a simple folder system to organize chats by name, instead of having to manage a long, ever-growing list over time.

I must correct myself today I found evidence that chats within a project can access and be aware of each other, I don’t know if OpenAI changed something.

The enhanced project memory feature (June 2025) extracts contextual insights only from previous chats within the same project to deliver more relevant responses. However, this does not mean that specific information is automatically shared across different sessions within the project.
