Disambiguate ChatGPT and Codex

Dear team,

I tried latest integration in the app Codex + ChatGPT and had to switch back to desktop version for following reasons:

  1. Conversation history is often stuck on Codex when switching back to ChatGPT mode.
  2. All my attempts to use ChatGPT (not Codex) to do something on my machine failed. I tried attaching MCP servers, developing plugins, etc. Switching to work mode switches to Codex model

Why would not I just use Codex mode?
I spend most of my communication time exploring possibilities and brainstorming, not just hacking python. (I am an AI architect) and Codex lacks imagination that ChatGPT model has and always assumes that statistically generic decision is the answer, whereas I require it to align with my unspoken quest for nuances and discoveries. If I have to switch to codex, it would be like an alliance of lame and blind.
I Really, Really would like give ChatGPT ability to do MCP tasks on local machine without having to switch to Codex. I realize, that for most people it may work, but don’t leave researchers astray.

I propose:

  1. Clearly separate the two personalities: Codex (dry and focused action) and ChatGPT (nuanced and sensitive explorer) with CLEARLY separate conversatoin history (but maybe an ability to read one another) Clear color coding in the application that visually distinguishes the two modes

  2. Give both ability to handle mcp/tools

  3. Who knows, maybe later you can add a third personality to this.

Thank you very much!
You’ve made my life more interesting and explorations more profound.

I can relate to this. Sometimes I just want to brainstorm an idea and explore different possibilities, and other times I want the AI to actually get things done. Those are pretty different experiences.

I think the confusing part is when switching modes also changes how the AI approaches the problem. Clearer separation would help, but I’d still want them to share context when needed. Having to explain the same project twice would be annoying.

Maybe ChatGPT should be the place where you figure out what to do, and Codex is where you get it done. But both should be able to use tools when needed.
