(De-)Archiving issues. Troubleshooting didn't work

I’m posting this because I’m honestly running out of options and I’d like to know whether anyone else has seen similar behavior.

I have a large number of older, very long ChatGPT conversations that were archived after reaching the conversation limit. Recently, so like around the time of February/March, many of them became partially inaccessible. The confusing part is that the behavior differs depending on the device:

On web, affected chats show "Conversation could not be loaded. On Android, some show “The conversation is too long, please start a new one.”

On iPad, some of the same chats can still appear through search and may even open, but unarchiving fails.

On Android, some show “The conversation is too long, please start a new one.”

The conversations still appear in my data export, so this does not look like simple deletion. More like some kind of inconsistent conversation/archive state or metadata issue affecting older long chats.

Support has mostly pointed me toward using the data export or starting a new chat, but that does not solve the actual problem: I want to access the existing history, copy/save what I need, and then clean up/delete those chats. A new chat does not help with that, and the export is not always equivalent to the in-product conversation view, especially with edited/regenerated paths inside a conversation.

Has anyone else run into older long archived conversations becoming inaccessible or impossible to unarchive like this?

Hey @Mattaro, this isn't ideal, agreed.

For very old archived conversations, ChatGPT may not be able to reliably load the unarchived conversations in the UI.

The best available workaround is to use your ChatGPT data export to recover the conversation content. The export is designed to include your chat history, so you can review the exported files, copy or save the content you need, and then clean up any conversations that remain accessible in the product

Well, I did mean to clean my archive after going through those chat. The annyoing part is that the export only shows the most recent history. I did retries of answers, edits and even “multiple paths”, if you catch my drift. Which are sadly not visible on the export. The weird part is that the lastest faulty chat is from july of last year. I have one from august of 2025, and it works just fine. But one from February 2025 and one from November 2024 work just fine. To be fair, I didn’t reach the conversation limit on, but still. There much older than some of the broken ones and work a-okay.

Yeah, that’s frustrating. Unfortunately, once a chat is deleted, there isn’t currently a way to restore it.

One thing that helps is periodically cleaning up older/unneeded chats instead of keeping a very large history, since accidental deletions can be hard to recover from later.

I’ll also flag this feedback internally since a few people have run into the same issue and better recovery options would definitely help here.

I think you misunderstood me. The chats weren’t deleted. They’re stuck in this weird limbo between visible through the search bar/archive/export but unable to be opened/de-archived without getting an error message. I tried everything, but I can’t get the error fixed. And 35 (I deleted one chat to see if that’s possible. it was) chats being in this state is really rough, and it really has me worried in case more important chats fall victim to this in the future, too.

Thanks for flagging it, though. Here’s to hoping someone internal will do something.

To help with this efficiently, I’d recommend opening a support case and letting me know the case number so I can take a look at it.

Case Number should be 08641555.
