Custom GPT Usage Limit - University Student Assignments

I’m a University Professor in Social Sciences creating a custom GPT for my students - I have 200 on the course and want to use it in the assessment. I’m trying to get around the fact that all my students use it to write their essays anyway, so I may as well get them to use it to learn and examine that learning…

Using some of the ideas of Ethan Mollick at Wharton, I’ve created and tested a ‘Tutor’ GPT using my lecture notes and slides as the basis. I’ve configured it and now got a shareable link. Students will be able to chat with this and then, as part of their assessment task, write about what they have learnt from the interaction.

My questions are, is there a ridiculously small limit to what my students will be able to do (assuming they are on the free version)? How much is it and when does it reset? Are they limited per student, or am I limited for the users? My fear is that I release it and then students encounter a limit and then can’t do the assignment.

I’m on ChatGPT Plus.

I’ve searched for the answer but most of them are old answers or don’t quite answer this question. Thanks for your answer to what is probably a basic question…

Your custom GPTs are not restricted by the number of users, and you cannot set any lower or upper limits for other users. Anyone can use your custom GPTs if they are public, but there are some limitations based on the user’s subscription type: Free, Plus, or Pro.

For Free accounts, users can make 10 prompts within 5 hours while using the GPT-4o model. Custom GPTs also run on the GPT-4o model.

What is ChatGPT Plus?

I just tested this. At 11:40 AM, it showed that my limit resets at 4:30 PM.
It means 4 hours and 50 minutes later, I can use again that custom GPT.

Ah thank you so much for the response. This is helpful.

So just to check:

  • I create a custom GPT and share it with my 200 students.
  • They then use it.
  • The only thing that will stop them is, assuming they are on free, they will get a limit of 10 prompts. After that there is a cool-down period after which they can use it again.
  • For example, an individual could use it 10 times over 10 days and get 100 prompts.

And so if all 200 use it in a day, that will still be ok - there will be 200 x 10 prompts?

Yes!

Free account individual may use 10 prompts every 5 hours, so daily can use 40 prompts, and in 10 days 400 prompts.

If you say 200 individuals x 400 prompts in 10 days, also OK.

However!

Please note that unused messages do not accumulate. For example:

  • If a Free account users wait 5 hours, they will not have 20 messages available to use for the next 5 hours on GPT-4o or custom GPT
    or
  • If a Free account users wait 15 hours, they will not have 40 messages available to use for the next 5 hours on GPT-4o or custom GPT

Your Custom GPTs can be used by millions, millions, millions users, no problem :grinning: there is no user limit, but prompt limit.
