Building a GPT persona that has a distinct, sharp-tongued, or witty character is tricky. The model often drifts into polite neutrality, losing the personality you want, especially across different GPT versions. Anchoring the style while keeping outputs accurate and flexible is the key challenge.

What does you current approach look like? Do you have “high level” workflows defined for how to convert general response to a “sharp-tongued” ones? Any evaluation criterias and learning loops?

The task is not trivial and definitely multistep, so would be good to start by looking at how it is done at this point to see if there is something missing in the current implementation.

My current approach involves defining a base personality, then applying prompt patterns to make responses sharp-tongued.

High-level workflow:

Input analysis → 2. Personality template selection → 3. Prompt modification → 4. Output evaluation.

Evaluation / Learning:

I evaluate by comparing the outputs to example sharp-tongued responses and iteratively tweak prompts to improve alignment.

Yes, IMHO, mostly underdevelopped workflow for getting the “style”. I had success with following approach:

Components (high level):

  • Answers - basically RAG with model answering the user message
  • Styler - the flow that converts answer from “normal” to “styled” (fine-tuned model(s))
  • Controller - the flow that checks the the “styled” answer and classifies based on how good we did the style (0-9 single digit score) + flow to store the pairs “normal” - “styled” + score (for learning)
  • Style gateway - code to reroute the styled answer based on the score : to moderator ←→ to adjuster
  • Adjuster - model analyzing the answer with lower scores (configurable threshold) and providing the instructions how to improve the style + flow to store the input (context, normal answer, styled answer) and output (the adjusting prompt) → then send back to styler with context, normal answer, styled answer + adjusting prompt
  • Moderator - final sanity check (are we sure we want to say that) with a structured response containing the styled answer (potentially edited), “resolution” 0 - retry (goes to adjuster), 1 - pass (goes to responder), and the “moderator’s note” (used for adjuster). Here also capture the input and output to store.
  • Answer gateway - code to read the resolution and reroute the answer : to adjuster ←→ to responder
  • Responder - finalizes the answer and responds to the user (formatting, etc)

Styler is fine-tuned based on preselected high score styled answers (scores:7-9). System prompt (instructions + context) - user message (normal answer) - assistant response (styled answer)

I didn’t go all the way down to fine-tune the adjuster or moderator, system prompt was enough. It’s basically the styler that does all the job, the rest of the system is to support it and to feed high quality samples. No need for tons, in my case 400 was enough.

Nice thing: fine-tunes of styler become “tone skins” you can just plug into an instance and the the “sharp tongue” (for me it was “brand voice”).

Search my old messages on how to get the initial set of “style skins” from regular text samples (instruct the “neutralizer” model that converts “styled answer” to “neutral answer”, then collect data, reverse the roles user←→assistant and fine-tune initial v0.0.1 of the styler, then run it through the pipeline and select only best answer to get the master set).

You have several topics here with essentially unanswerable prompting questions from the consumer space that are also marked by the telltale signs of AI generation, with watermark-like phrases and ambiguous language (although it may be using AI models for translation as well, which can produce such effects).

Prompting is somewhat a solved problem—solved by the instruction-following of AI models these days. You do not need to carefully craft lead-up language or trick a word-completion engine into acting like an AI being; that is built in.

Plus, there is no real way to improve the intelligence of an offered AI model besides putting it into the correct frame of mind, another winding topic you have re-posted. If the problem is “I want it to only write true facts,” the problem is that all the world’s knowledge of truth can’t be contained on a few GPUs in a server, minimized models tuned to run efficiently.

And finally, on ChatGPT, the web-based subscription platform, a “GPT” is ultimately just a block of text that is de-prioritized from “You are ChatGPT,” and from the AI’s reasoning that may doubt that text - text that is run alongside a thousand tokens of tool descriptions. You cannot have absolute control of the input context an AI model sees there.

fine-tuning is the answer, you can’t use a bare grammar book to match the style perfectly, it needs adjustments, here the fin-tuning is the only answer
