Feature Request: Contextual Inline Clarification for ChatGPT
The problem
When ChatGPT gives a detailed explanation, I often encounter a word or concept that I don’t understand.
For example:
“PostgreSQL’s process-based architecture makes it vulnerable to performance bottlenecks…”
If I don’t know what “process-based architecture” means, I currently have to stop reading and ask ChatGPT:
“What does process-based architecture mean?”
This creates a new interaction in the main conversation and interrupts the flow of the original explanation.
Proposed feature
Allow users to select or highlight a word, phrase, or sentence inside a ChatGPT response and get a small contextual pop-up explaining it.
The explanation should appear separately from the main conversation.
For example:
User highlights:
process-based architecture
A small pop-up appears:
Process-based architecture
In this context, it means PostgreSQL uses separate operating-system processes for its database connections.
Each process has its own resources and page table.
Why it matters here:
This architecture contributes to the performance issue being discussed because those processes can experience page faults while interacting with shared memory.[Got it] [Explain deeper] [Show example]
The user can close the pop-up and continue reading the original response exactly where they left off.
The important part
The clarification should not become another message in the conversation.
The main conversation remains unchanged.
This makes the feature useful for learning because the user can resolve small points of confusion without constantly interrupting the main explanation.
Context should matter
The explanation shouldn’t simply be a dictionary definition.
ChatGPT already knows the context in which the selected text appeared, so it should explain the selected term in the context of that particular response.
For example, selecting:
page fault
could produce an explanation specifically related to the PostgreSQL/Linux discussion rather than a generic operating-systems definition.
Possible interactions
Depending on what the user selects:
-
Select a word/phrase → Explain
-
Select a sentence → Simplify
-
Select a concept → Give an example
-
Select two concepts → Compare
-
Select a technical term → Explain in this context
This could be especially useful for programming, mathematics, science, legal documents, research papers, and learning new subjects.
Why I think this would be useful
One of ChatGPT’s strengths is explaining complicated subjects conversationally.
But learning often happens in small steps:
Read → encounter unfamiliar concept → understand it → continue.
Currently, asking about that unfamiliar concept can interrupt the conversation.
A contextual pop-up would allow users to explore without losing their place.
It would make ChatGPT feel less like a sequence of messages and more like an interactive learning environment.
Visual concept
I’ve attached a mockup showing how this could work.
The user highlights a term in the ChatGPT response, and a contextual explanation appears alongside it without modifying the original conversation.
