Prashant Padasi, I really don’t think regular paying users should have to deal with this kind of verification so often. It would make more sense to focus on stopping people who use the service without paying.

Paid users and trial users shouldn’t feel like they’re getting the same treatment. Otherwise, what’s stopping someone from just making a new account every month and using the trial instead of paying?

This really hurts the experience for people who actually keep paying. Also, new users often get discounts or free trials, but long-time users rarely get anything. Even a small discount, like $1 or $2, would make loyal users feel more appreciated.

I hope you guys can seriously think about this.

I’m a paying ChatGPT Plus subscriber.

I can still log into my OpenAI account.
I still have access to my email.
I still pay for my subscription.

But I can’t use Codex because it requires phone verification.

The phone number on my account no longer exists.

I contacted support and received this response:

“OpenAI doesn’t currently let you change or update the phone number associated with an account.”

So let me get this straight:

  • Codex requires phone verification.

  • Lost access to your old phone number?

  • You can’t update it.

  • You can’t remove it.

  • You can’t replace it.

  • Support can’t help.

As a result, a paying customer loses access to a product they are actively paying for.

The issue is not phone verification.

The issue is that OpenAI has no recovery path for users whose verified phone numbers become unavailable.

How is that acceptable for a paid service in 2026?
