Every time I restart the app, I lose some existing conversations, the ‘new’ badge get’s cleared, and all messages get resorted.
Hi @brainstencil
Yeah, that’s definitely not expected, especially the conversations appearing to disappear and everything getting reshuffled after a restart.
Just to clarify one piece: when those conversations “go missing,” are they actually gone, or can you still find them via search?
The combo you’re describing (unread badges clearing + resorting + missing chats) sounds like the app may be re-syncing or re-indexing incorrectly on launch, which would explain why the state isn’t sticking between sessions.
If you can share a bit more detail, it would really help pin this down:
- macOS version
- App version
- Whether this happens every time you restart the app or only occasionally
- If search still finds the “missing” conversations
Appreciate you flagging this, happy to help dig further once we have a bit more to go on.

Having the same issue. Threads completely vanish after restart or updates. But they do seem searchable assuming i can remember the right keywords. Please fix
MacOS version: Version 15.0 (24A335)
Codex version: Version 26.506.31421 (2620)
Having the same issue. Threads completely vanish after restart or updates, I asked Codex to bring it back and did but the conversation did not, and then the conversation appears and when I close the app and start it again it disappeared again.
- macOS version: 26.5.1
- App version: 26.602.40724
- Whether this happens every time you restart the app or only occasionally: Yes it happens every time I start the app.
- If search still finds the “missing” conversations: Yes it find it but I can’t access it.

same issue for me today, all my chats are gone after a windows update and a restart.
If I click “Exit” and restart codex, I can briefly see my conversations in the left pane, but then they disapear. I can search for them so it looks like they are still somewhere, but this is very anoying.
Welcome to the forum.. I do enjoy your name!
This happened to me in the first wave, when this thread was born… once OpenAi was alerted to it, it only took a day or two for them to clean it up.
Makes you wonder if Windows Update is worth turning off ![]()
