Clearly Highlight the Currently Open Chat in the Sidebar

I would like to suggest a relatively small UI improvement that would make ChatGPT much easier to use for people who maintain many ongoing conversations.

When I click on an older conversation in the left sidebar, I would like that conversation to remain clearly highlighted/selected in the sidebar while I am working in it.

The problem

I often have multiple ongoing conversations, sometimes covering projects that continue over weeks or months. If I leave my computer and come back later, it is not always immediately obvious which conversation I was working on.

I currently have to look through the conversations and sometimes start reading the content to figure out where I left off.

Suggested solution

When a conversation is opened:

  • Highlight it clearly in the left sidebar.
  • Keep the highlight visible while that conversation is active.
  • When I open another conversation, move the highlight to the newly selected conversation.
  • Preserve the selected/highlighted state even when the sidebar is scrolled.

This seems like a small change, but it would provide an immediate visual indication of “this is the conversation I’m currently working on.”

For users with many long-running conversations, I believe this would be a meaningful usability improvement.

Thank you for considering it.

Thanks for the clear suggestion. We’ll pass along the request to keep the active chat visibly highlighted in the sidebar, including while scrolling. We don’t have a timeline to share.
