Clarification on building and deploying a retail app in ChatGPT

Looking for clarification on building and deploying a retail app in ChatGPT (Apps SDK capabilities vs partnerships)

Hi all,

We’re currently exploring building a retail/e-commerce experience within ChatGPT using the Apps SDK.

We’ve gone through the documentation, and while the basic setup seems straightforward, we’re trying to understand what is realistically achievable through the current SDK versus what may require additional access.

Specifically:

  • What does the full build → submission → approval flow and timeline look like today for ChatGPT apps?

  • Are there supported patterns for rendering richer product experiences (e.g., product carousels, recommendations, or embedded shopping flows)?

  • Are these types of UI components available via the SDK today, or are they limited to specific partners / early access implementations?

  • For teams that have successfully deployed apps, are there any best practices or common blockers we should be aware of?

    We’re working with engineering teams that are comfortable building this—the main gap seems to be around deployment expectations and platform capabilities rather than implementation itself.
