ChatGPT Web: Previous / Next Prompt Navigation Bookmarklet

ChatGPT Web: Previous / Next Prompt Navigation Bookmarklet

I had a similar need when working with long ChatGPT conversations, so I searched the community and found these related discussions:

Both topics are now closed, so I’m sharing a small community workaround.

I built ChatGPT Conversation Navigator for ChatGPT Web:

It is a lightweight bookmarklet that adds:

  • ↑ Previous Prompt

  • ↓ Next Prompt

  • Alt + ↑ / Alt + ↓

  • No browser extension or Tampermonkey required

It is designed for long conversations, including cases where a single assistant response spans many screens.

One issue I found is that ChatGPT may dynamically remove and restore distant conversation nodes from the DOM, so simply jumping to the previous or next DOM element is not always reliable. The bookmarklet instead uses nearby user/assistant messages as navigation anchors.

The current version focuses on user prompt → previous/next user prompt navigation.

This is only an unofficial workaround and may need updates if ChatGPT’s web DOM changes.

Ideally, I’d still like to see this added as a native ChatGPT Web feature, so users don’t need an external bookmarklet or script for basic previous/next prompt navigation.

Feedback is welcome.

@OpenAI_Support I’ve seen quite a few users asking for similar previous/next prompt navigation.

I’ve now implemented a working version of this behavior as a bookmarklet for ChatGPT Web. I hope it can serve as a reference for adding this as a native ChatGPT Web feature, so users don’t need an external script.
