Title:
Feature Request: Active Topic Monitoring and Thread Segmentation Inside a Single Chat

Body:

I frequently use ChatGPT for long, multi-topic conversations and ongoing projects (for example: BIOS tuning and hardware configuration, long-term PC builds, trading education, personal planning, creative writing, etc.).

Within a single chat, it is very easy for the conversation to drift from one topic to another, sometimes several times in a row. A typical sequence looks like this:

  • Start: discussing which ChatGPT model/version I am using

  • Then: we switch to Windows issues and troubleshooting

  • Then: BIOS settings and safe CPU limits

  • Then: trading strategies and risk management

  • Then: a funny story for someone, or something completely different

All of this happens inside one chat thread.

Over time, this creates two big problems:

  1. It becomes extremely hard to find things again.
    Even with keyword search, I often struggle to locate the specific part where we talked about (for example) a particular BIOS setting or a specific trading idea. The information is “there somewhere”, but mixed with multiple unrelated topics.

  2. The chat becomes logically “messy” and overwhelming.
    There is no clear structure by topic. The only way to keep things clean is to manually create many separate chats and try to remember which one was for which topic – but in practice, humans don’t always do that, especially when we are thinking aloud and naturally jumping between ideas.

Because of this, I would love to propose a new feature:


Feature: Active Topic Monitoring inside a single chat (“Topic Monitor”)

The core idea:
ChatGPT should be able to actively detect when the conversation is switching to a new topic, inform the user, and offer tools to segment or label the conversation by topic inside one chat.

Below are the main elements of how this could work.


1. Automatic detection of topic shifts

The model already understands context and semantics very well. That could be used to continuously track “what we are currently talking about”.

When a new user message is semantically far from the previous topic (for example, we move from “BIOS voltages” to “trading psychology”), the system could treat that as a topic change event.

At that moment, ChatGPT could show a small, unobtrusive notification above or near the response, for example:

“It looks like we might be switching to a new topic (from BIOS settings to trading).
Would you like to keep this inside the current chat, or start a new topic from here?”

This detection should be:

  • tolerant of small digressions,

  • but sensitive to clear big shifts (domain, vocabulary, intent).


2. Visual indicator – a “topic traffic light”

It would be helpful to have a simple visual indicator of how much the current message stays on the main topic, such as:

  • Green – message is clearly within the current topic

  • Orange – possible side track / subtopic

  • Red – likely a new topic entirely

This indicator could be shown in:

  • the chat header (small colored dot / icon), or

  • next to each user message block that starts a new topic, or

  • as a small bar/separator in the timeline.

The user doesn’t need to understand the underlying algorithm; they just see, “Ah, now we’re in a new topic.”


3. Offer to split or create a new “topic thread” from a message

When a topic change is detected (especially “red”), the system could offer:

  • Option A:
    “Start a new chat from this message onward”
    → This would create a separate chat, using that message as the first message of the new topic.

  • Option B:
    “Create a new topic label inside this chat”
    → This keeps everything inside one conversation, but marks the section with a topic name, like:

    • “Project CORE – BIOS configuration”

    • “Trading – account management”

    • “Creative writing – short stories”

The user could either select from automatically suggested topic names (generated by the model) or type their own custom name.


4. Visible separators between topics within a chat

When a new topic is created or detected, ChatGPT could insert a visible separator into the conversation history. Something like:

These separators would make it much easier to scroll through the chat and visually see where one topic ends and another starts.

Ideally, topics could be:

  • collapsed/expanded,

  • listed in a small side panel as an outline,

  • quickly navigated (jump to “Topic: BIOS – safe voltages”).


5. Topic-based filtering and viewing

A very powerful addition would be the ability to filter the chat by topic.

For example:

  • “Show only messages related to the topic: BIOS”

  • “Show only parts of this conversation related to: Trading / Money Management”

Technically, this could be implemented by:

  • using the topic labels created above, and/or

  • performing automatic topic classification and then clustering messages under those labels.

From the user’s perspective, it should feel simple:
I click on a topic name, and the chat view temporarily shows only that topic’s messages (or highlights them while dimming the others).

This would be incredibly helpful for long-term projects, where I come back weeks or months later and want only one specific area of the conversation.


6. A toggle: “Topic Monitor – ON/OFF”

It’s important that this feature is optional.

In some chats, users want completely free-flow conversation with no structure. In others, they want strict organization.

So there could be a toggle:

  • Per-chat:
    “Topic Monitor: ON / OFF”

  • Or in global settings, with a per-chat override.

When ON, ChatGPT actively:

  • monitors topics,

  • warns about big shifts,

  • offers to segment/split,

  • shows indicators and separators.

When OFF, it behaves as it does today: no topic awareness in the UI, just answers.


7. Preserving global context while improving structure

Even if the conversation is split into several topic threads or segments, the model could internally remember that they come from the same user and “big picture” context.

That means:

  • The user gets better structure and navigation,

  • while the model can still benefit from long-term knowledge about that user’s projects (e.g. hardware configuration, preferences, style).

For users who work on complex, multi-month or multi-year projects with ChatGPT, this is extremely valuable.


Why this would be useful

For users like me, who:

  • use ChatGPT as a technical assistant (BIOS settings, hardware tuning, Python learning, etc.),

  • use it for long-term projects (custom PC builds, system design, trading and risk management, planning),

  • and also for creative and everyday tasks (stories, explanations, planning, etc.),

the conversation often becomes a long “timeline” of everything mixed together.

An Active Topic Monitoring feature would:

  • make long chats much more searchable and navigable,

  • reduce the need to manually create many separate chats for every subtopic,

  • prevent “getting lost” in my own history,

  • and generally turn ChatGPT into a more structured workspace for serious, long-term use.

I believe many power users and Plus/Enterprise users would benefit from this, not only technically oriented users.

Thank you for considering this feature. I think it would significantly improve the experience of people who rely on ChatGPT as a long-term thinking partner across multiple domains and projects.

Feature Request: Persistent “Usage Indicator” for ChatGPT (Battery-Style Visual Meter)

Summary

I’d like to propose adding a simple, persistent usage indicator to the ChatGPT interface — similar to a smartphone battery icon — that visually displays how many requests/interactions remain in the user’s current plan or usage cycle.


Problem

Users currently have no immediate or intuitive way to understand how many requests they’ve used or how many remain. This creates uncertainty:

  • Am I close to hitting the limit?

  • Should I save some requests for later?

  • Did I already hit my daily/hourly quota?

  • Why did the model suddenly slow down or deny new requests?

Information technically exists, but it’s hidden, non-transparent, and not surfaced at the moment when the user needs it most.

This is especially relevant for power users, mobile users, and those performing long research or coding sessions.


Proposed Solution

Introduce a small, unobtrusive usage meter in the UI — similar to a battery icon — that updates in real time.

Possible UI versions:

  • Battery-style icon with 0–100% fill

  • Circular progress ring

  • Thin horizontal bar under the message field

  • Tooltip showing exact numbers (optional)

The indicator should remain minimalistic, non-intrusive, and informational, without affecting the user workflow.


Why This Helps

This isn’t a request for changing limits — only for making them visible, clear, and user-friendly.

I believe this would be a simple but highly impactful improvement to the ChatGPT experience.
